All right, roll out the big guns: yesterday we reported on Dave Kearns' remarkably misleading column for Network World in which he makes fun of Apple's "switcher" commercials because he thinks the only PC people who would change to Macs are brainless jellyfish who can't maintain their PCs or don't have the sense to hire an IT guru. What's worse, he betrays astonishing ignorance about what Macs can do and in effect tells his readers not to believe the ads. This is the paragraph that set off alarms for several Applelinks readers: "There's Janie Porche, the young woman who saved Christmas. It seems her poor dad needed to spend hours downloading drivers for his new digital camera (evidently her dad is still connected to the 'Net at 300 baud). Porche just "put a cord" between the camera and her Powerbook, and it automatically downloaded all the pictures. Imagine that - I wonder which brand of camera THAT was!" Our interpretation of the last sentence is that Kearns doesn't think this is possible. Interestingly, a faithful reader just emailed us this anecdote that ought to give our Network World "guru" fits: "Just yesterday, an employee came to me w/ a borrowed digtal cam wanting to download the pictures. I can't even remember what brand it was. I took it, removed the USB cable from my flatscreen iMac to the printer, plugged it into the camera and BOOM... the camera drive was on my desktop. From there it was a simple click and drag to a new folder. For the record, the flat-panel iMac was running OS 9.2 and the camera was an Olympus D370. "BOOM!"
