GyazMail has a clean and attractive interface adhering to Aqua conventions. It's appearance reminded me a bit of the Okito Composer Cocoa word processor.
I found GyazMail's configuration dialogs especially intuitive and eay to use.
GyazMail also worked smoothly and quickly checking my mailbox.

OS X 10.2 Install problems You can upgrade from Jaguar single to family pack! RBrowser Lite FTP for OS X Getting ViaVoice for OS X to work on 10.2 (Jaguar) Is Jaguar More Like Garfield -- Fat, Slow, and Deeply Flawed? From Chris Long Hey Charles: Is Jaguar More Like Garfield -- Fat, Slow, and Deeply Flawed? Low End Mac's New Zealand correspondent Dirk Pilat has been checking out Jaguar on his iBook. He comments:
"With other words, the whole Jaguar experience so far was quite underwhelming... I agree 100% ... it's very usable but nothing to get excited about. more of THE SAME, at least for me. YAWN.
me too.
I'll reserve judgment on 'deeply flawed' -- this remains to be seen. but FAT and SLOW are FACTS, not opinions -- just look at how much disk space OSX takes up, look at how much RAM OSX eats up, and look at how much TIME it takes to do simple things in OSX. there's simply no question about it -- it's FAT and it's SLOW. OS 9 ain't dead yet, folks. C From Dave Birch Sorry to bother you, but I noticed you wrote
This has happened to me as well: what is the solution? Here are the symptoms... B&W G3 running 10.2 keep inexplicably quitting applications ... moron owner (me) thinks "I'll do a clean install" ... result is system won't boot. The initial grey apple screen comes up for a few seconds and then becomes "corrupted" by bands of horizontal noise and machine locks up. I rebuilt the machine step by step, and discovered that while it boots into 10.1.3 fine it will not boot into 10.2 from the Apple Install Disk 1. Any ideas would be very, very much appreciated.

Hi Dave;
Could you perhaps have one of the corrupted 10.2 install disks they were talking about over at MacFixIt or MacInTouch?
Beyond that, with my limited practical knowledge of Jaguar install issues, I'm at a loss as to what it might be, given that you say 10.1.3 works OK.

I went over to Macfixit and followed the thread: it worked! After a couple of days of being driven crazy by this, all I had to do was take the 10.2 install disk 1 and clean it! I am how a happy 10.2 user (and Applelinks reader).
Regards,
Glad I was able to help in some small way, Dave.
Charles You can upgrade from Jaguar single to family pack! From Wayne Folta Charles, I'd pre-ordered the Jaguar upgrade before I heard of the Family Pack deal. I wrote to Apple and said that I would've preferred to get the Family Pack, and suggesting that they offer an upgrade from single to Family for the difference in price ($70) for those of us who'd pre-ordered the single-user license. I haven't called them yet to try to take advantage of the offer, but it appears that they will do it. Here's their reply: Thank you for your email. You can upgrade from the single user to the Family pack without having to return the original order. Please contact Apple Store Sales Support so that we can assist with an upgrade. We can be reached at 1-800-676-2775, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. central time, Monday-Friday, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. central time, Saturday and Sunday. More on single->family upgrade From Wayne Folta Charles, I called Apple and basically they will change your order (and charge you more) if you got the single-user Jaguar upgrade from them and want to pay the difference in price and get the Family (5-user) Jaguar upgrade instead. In my case, I'd ordered through MacMall so I can't do it. I've asked Apple to consider making the single->five upgrade be a product that can be purchased instead of an order edit. Then those who bought from MacMall, etc, can also take advantage of the new licensing. From Thubten Kunga You may have overlooked an amazingly easy to learn and use and elegant FTP client that is also freeware RBrowserLite at http://www.rbrowser.com/RBrowserLite/RBrowserLite.html Try it you may love it. I tried it a few days ago and it took me about 30 seconds to learn how to use it. Incredibly intuitive interface. Just a free tip from someone who was very impressed with it. Havent tried either of the two you just reviewed. Thubten Kunga
Hi Thubten;
I reviewed RBrowser Lite in OS X Odyssey 116.
I agree that it's a nice FTP client. However, I like the Captain FTP interface better.
Charles From Melvin D Krewall Charles, Since you were reviewing FTP applications for OS X, I thought I would point out my all-time favorite FTP application, NetFinder. NetFinder mimics the Mac OS finder operation. To download, you simply drag the file from the remote window to a Finder window on your machine. To upload just do the reverse. It is carbonized to run in both OS 9 and X and has been rock-solid stable for me. No, it is not free, but it has been around for years and is well maintained by its' authors. I would encourage you to give it a try. Mel Krewall
Hi Mel;
That's one I haven't tried. I'll put it on my list.
Charles Getting ViaVoice for OS X to work on 10.2 (Jaguar) From T. Patrick Henebry Charles, Getting ViaVoice for OS X to work under Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) is simply a matter of setting a couple of system preferences. Open System Preferences, next open the Speech pane and click the Speech Recognition tab followed by the Listening tab, then set the microphone to AK5370 (this is how the NC-7100 USB microphone is identified--due to the electronics in the USB adapter). Next open the Sound pane and click the Input tab, then choose AK5370. One or the other of the preferences may already bet set correctly; but unless *both* are set this way ViaVoice for OS X won't work properly under 10.2 The 2nd aspect of your email from the gentleman with quadriplegia puzzles me a bit. I use ViaVoice for OS X on a daily basis due to problems with my hands. If the gentleman has read at least three of the training texts *and* had ViaVoice analyze approximately 20,000 words worth of sample documents he should be getting at least 98% accuracy at a rate of 100wpm on a G4 with say 512MB. If he has skipped the document analysis he still should get those results after about 1 week of use. The key is to save everything he does *and* save the audio info. This causes ViaVoice to analyze each saved document. At some point he may also be get a message saying that ViaVoice has enough recorded speech to analyze. He should let the computer do so. I've used speech recognition for years on multiple platforms. In all cases today's speech recognition software is capable of 100wpm and 98% accuracy *if* it's properly used, and *if* the hardware is powerful enough (NOT just the box specified minimums). T. Patrick Henebry
Hi Patrick;
Thanks for the tutorial.
I'm pretty pleased with how both ViaVoice and iListen work on my Pismo PowerBook. I agree that the minimum supported hardware is barely usable. 400 MHz G3 seems to be the threshold of decent performance, although I used ViaVoice ME For more information, visit: a couple of years on a 233 MHz Wallstreet, and it wasn't intolerable.
