An amazing proportion of Mac users with never alter their Finder Preferences setting from the Mac OS default settings, whether in OS X or the Classic Mac OS. In OS X, the Finder Preferences are accessed from the Finder menu, which appears in the standard Application menu slot when the Finder is frontmost. Selecting Preferences from the Finder menu opens a dialog box that allows you to tailor Finder appearance and behavior to your individual needs and tastes. The categories are: Show these items on the Desktop You can specify which volume icons you want displayed, including your hard disk (or partitions); removable media such as CD-ROMs, DVDs, or Zip disks; and servers you're connected to over in network. I keep all these boxes checked, but the choice is up to each user. New Finder window shows This control gives you the option of selecting whether your Home folder for the main Computer Window will appear when you choose a new Finder window from the File menu. The default is Computer Window. Many users will find it more convenient to select Home. Always open folders in a new window When you double click a folder in a window in OS X, its contents just replace whatever was previously showing in your open window, rather than opening the folder as a new, separate window as it would in the Classic Mac OS. You can restore the traditional Mac OS Finder behavior by clicking this box. Keep a Window's view the same This control, when checked, makes a folder open in the same view (e.g.: icon, list, column) as a folder you accessed it from. Always show file extensions File extensions are those little .xxx suffixes that the Mac Finder landscape has been blessedly uncluttered with until OS X, such as.txt, .rtf, and so on. With OS X, you can choose to display them in the Finder if you check this box person. Personally, I choose not to, but again, that's up to you. Conservatives.net AOL Skins the Jaguar
Fruit Menu
From: Nathan Keller
Hi. Sorry to bother you but I have a question. I read your review of Zingg!. In it I saw that you had Fruit Menu. Where can I get Fruit Menu and does it do what I think it does? What I am looking for is a utility or set of utilities that will allow me to have an OS 9 style applemenu in OSX and also a trash can on the desktop. My goal would be to get rid of the dock. Is this possible? Do such utlities exist and is Fruit Menu one of them? Thanks for any tips.
Sincerely,
Hi Nathan;
You can read my review of Fruit Menu in OS X Odyssey 89, which can be accessed here: http://www.applelinks.com/news/odyssey/
Fruit Menu Features:
You can also drop any number of aliases or files in FruitMenu Items folder located inside Library folder of your home folder, and they will show up in the Apple menu -- eg: the Calculator and Stickies or your favorite applications or whatever. You could, if you wish, turn off the Dock and use FruitMenu for launching apps. and application switching.
Fruit Menu is $7.00 demoware.
You can download it at:
Charles From Noel McRae EBible will be nice when it gets a newer Bible version. The KJV is too antiquated to be of use with most people. I never use it anymore. I will wait on that one. I tried to get VeggieMail and all the links are dead. Where can I get it for a try? Sounds like a useful program for our Mac User Group folks to try to deal with ugly spam. Noel
Hi Noel;
Guess we'll have to agree to disagree on the KJV. I must have close to a dozen different Bible translations around the house, but the KJV remains my favorite by a wide margin. Others I use frequently are the gently modernized New King James Version, and the American Standard Version od 1901.
I notice that Conservatives.net has been revamping their Website, so the dead links are probably temporary. In the meantime, you could try VersionTracker or MacDownloads.com.
Charles From Glen Just thought you would like to know that the 'new' AOL giveaway disks are now decked out in all black, 'cept for some MAJOR Jaguar skin across the side of the package... Wonder where they got that idea from ? I did my part and put 610 of them in the incinerator.. Glen
