My sentiments exactly
From MikeWeaver Hello Charles, Great article on Jaguar. My sentiments exactly. I just don't know where Apple is headed. It seems they are becoming very inconsiderate of the very people who support them the greatest. How long can you last like that? Great article.
In Messiah,
From Roland Mulder Dear Charles, Of course Jaguar is worth $129! What was shown at the conference represents a very small percentage of the real work behind Jaguar. Consider iChat, Rendezvous, Sherlock 3 etc. as bonuses on top of all that. With Jaguar, you get code optimization throughout the whole operating system. All current application will benefit from this, including Mac OS 9 applications running in Classic. Just look at the speed optimizations in iTunes 3.0 to get an idea of what recent compilers and hard work can produce. I just can't wait for this happening to the whole OS with Jaguar and 129$ per year for the best and most beautiful OS available is a steal. Besides, you bought a Mac so you realize that it is well worth paying a little more for better quality. I don't know how much it costs to keep XP up to date but it can't be much less than that. The advent of Jaguar is time for enthusiasm and endorsement! The sour and bitter remarks you publish are so wrong and beside the point. I wonder what the hundreds of talented developers behind Mac OS X think when they read such negative press.

Hi Roland;
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Mine still nore approximate those of Guy Teague imediately below.
I don't mind paying a little more when I perceive inherent value. And for some users the value in Jaguar may be there. But as I noted in the article, for users like me, a lot of the enhancements are not that enticing.
We'll see.
Charles Tex-Edit services and Jaguar pricing From Guy Teague Hi Charles: Thanks for publishing my email on Tex-Edit services not working. Since I wrote I have found that many people have posted at VersionTracker about the same problem. It has to be something we are running that is conflicting, but so far no concensus as to what. Just thought I'd pass along the feedback I provided Apple to the Jaguar and Dot-Mac pricing: --- Jaguar http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/ --- Hi Folks: There's a lot of things I *could* say re the lack of upgrade path for osx 10.2, but I'll leave it at this: You folks have it exactly backwards--you actually *owe* those of us who ordered the OSX beta, installed it and spread the word that it was 'promising' and 'stable' to the rest of the user base. If we had not paid for this os and adopted it, you would have nothing to sell come Jaguar time. The user base would have concluded they were just fine with v9.22 for now. $129 is a fair price for someone buying the OS from scratch. $29-$79 would seem fair to reward me for all the hard work I personally ahve done for you in spreading the 'gospel' of OSX and switching many of my friends from OS9.
thanks,
JaguarFrom John Dennis I won't be buying Jaguar at $129. It is not worth it to me. Since I have a Rev B iMac and a WallStreet model it probably would not be worth it for me. Maybe some day if I ever upgrade I will do it then, but not any time soon. By then they will have another version out. From Christopher Kilner Hi Charles: Although I'm disappointed that Apple hasn't provided a cheaper upgrade to 10.2 for existing OS X users (and DON'T get me started on the fees for .mac!), it is still a good deal for those with multiple Macs to upgrade ... remember that the dark side requires a separate license for each machine. With three G3 computers on OS X, the extra speed alone from 10.2 should be worth $43/computer...heck, I, like many OS X users out there, never even paid for X; the 10.0.3 disk came with our iMac 600 and was used to upgrade the other two pre-X machines. I walked into the McLean, VA Apple Store for my free 10.1 upgrade (again used on all three Macs). So, to Steve Jobs: Yes, I already pre-ordered 10.2 and finally got around to paying for OS X. However, $49 (or $99) per year for .mac just to keep my mac.com address is another matter; "Free for life," as mac.com e-mail addresses were touted, should be FREE, for LIFE.
Peace,
Hi Chris; Good point on the multiple upgrades issue. Charles

in response to Guy Teague:
The first two are installed by iPhoto (as is PrintsService) and SummaryService is an Apple installed default (it will summarise any long sections of text you highlight into a short paragraph or two, FWIW). With Tex-Edit - does Guy have it installed in the Applications folder? If not, then this might be why it isn't working with Services. Cheers, Jonathan From John Martellaro If you don't recompile, then the software can run on the Sun but be displayed on the Mac. All you need is XTools or XDarwin or eXodus on Mac OS X. These are X-Window servers. But if you want to run natively, then one must recompile. And it all depends on what graphics libraries are used. If it's a pure X application, and you have the source code, it's certainly feasible. You'll likely need the Motif libraries. Feel free to pass this on. John Martellaro
