Macworld New York 2002

Keynote Concludes: More iSync Demos and a New iMac Model

Wednesday, July 17, 2002

By Senior Editor John H. Farr

Arrghh! No audio. We need QuickTime 6... ooops, Steve is back and invites the CEO of Singular [sp?] Wireless onto the stage. "Not about just voice anymore..." iSync described as a "killer app." Open standards, convergence lauded And Jobs leads up to "wouldn't it be great if you could synchronize...between multiple computers?" iSync and .Mac can be used to automatically sync all your computers! No more dragging Zip disks home with your daily files. Next topic: the iMac...

"One more thing" -- leading up to the new model, Jobs announces a $100 price drop on the previous high-end model. And there it is, the new 17-inch model, with the same viewing area as a 19-inch CRT monitor. The new iMac model has improved video and a SuperDrive and costs $1999. Availability, just a couple of weeks.

Jobs delivers a statement of belief in the evolution of the personal computer and promises to "innovate our way through this downturn," and that's it! Jobs leaves the stage and Grateful Dead music fills the auditorium...

Stay tuned to Applelinks for more Macworld coverage. Charles Moore will crank out the facts and specs (along with his own observations on the tone and promise of this season's Macworld Expo), yours truly will have more to say, and who knows what else we'll have for you as the day progresses. Bottom line: it's a Jaguar show, with a really cool new iMac model to boot, and of course the bottom line-enhancing iPod for Windows. The emphasis is on simplified networked data management and information sharing. Apple is pulling together multiple lines of technology and working like crazy to make the digital hub a far more "necessary" thing than most of us ever thought possible, and that's capitalism, folks: successfully market a need and the masses will pay for it. It looks to us like Steve Jobs and Apple has pulled it off again -- signing up for .Mac is half-price for now, and we imagine the credit card numbers are flying through cyberspace even as we "speak."
