Corel PHOTO-PAINT and CorelDRAW for Mac OS X Included With HP Scanners

Corel Corporation has announced that Corel PHOTO-PAINT 10 and CorelDRAW 10 for Macintosh will be bundled with the HP Scanjet 7400 series scanners. These two core applications of the Corel Graphics Suite will streamline the image-editing and layout process by enabling users to work directly in native Mac OS X mode.

"Corel PHOTO-PAINT 10 and CorelDRAW 10 provide HP scanners with the essential tools for professionals who demand high-quality results," said Steve Houck, executive vice-president of strategic relations at Corel Corporation. "With intuitive features and import/export support for industry standard file formats, Corel PHOTO-PAINT 10 and CorelDRAW 10 fit seamlessly into the workflow of creative Mac users."

"We chose Corel's Macintosh applications for our professional scanner line because they offer the power and OS X stability our customers need," said Hugh Amick, Mac-connect program manager, HP Imaging and Printing Group. "The high-speed, uncompromising image quality and versatility of our scanners, coupled with the professional image-editing, painting and layout tools provided by Corel PHOTO-PAINT 10 and CorelDRAW 10 for Macintosh, make for a robust solution for business professionals."

These bundles will be localized in English, French and German. Corel PHOTO-PAINT 10 will be bundled on the entire HP Scanjet 7400 series scanners, while CorelDRAW 10 will be included on the HP Scanjet 7490c model.

Keyspan Expands Its Family Of PC Remote Controls With A "Presentation Remote"

Keyspan is now shipping its new Presentation Remote, the perfect tool for Microsoft PowerPoint. The remote has an MSRP of $79 and is available now at leading retailers including CompUSA, and from direct marketers such as MicroWarehouse and CDW.

The Presentation Remote features a 900 Mhz radio frequency (RF) signal with a range of up to 40 feet, even through walls and other obstacles. It is the first remote control to provide RF reliability, mouse control and a laser pointer at a price under $100.

Keyspan's new remote allows presenters to focus on their audience rather than the keyboard. It is compatible with both Windows and Macintosh versions of PowerPoint and with all brands of projectors. One of the most attractive features of this remote is that both Windows and Mac OS recognize the Presentation Remote as a keyboard. Hence, there is no software to install, and once the RF receiver is plugged into a USB port you can begin your presentation within seconds.

In November of 1999, Keyspan released the Digital Media Remote (DMR), an innovative infrared remote (IR) control for PCs. The DMR was designed to control audio and video players on a PC, including MP3 players, DVDs and audio CDs. Keyspan's new remote focuses on the presentation market, offering full cursor control and a laser pointer.

"Though our Digital Media Remote has been a popular accessory with presenters, we knew that we could tailor a remote more specifically for the presentation market," noted Mike Ridenhour, president of Keyspan. "For this remote we reduced the number of buttons, added mouse control and also added a laser pointer."

About Keyspan Keyspan products provide "Connections for Your Computer. "The company's first products provided serial ports for connecting to traditional computer peripherals such as modems, printers and graphics tablets. Over time, Keyspan has expanded its horizons, connecting the PC and Macintosh to other items found in the home, school and office.

Keyspan is rated the #1 USB Connectivity vendor in the United States as ranked by NPD Intellect (formerly PC Data) for the year 2000 and again in 2001.

Deneba Canvas 8.0.4 Vector, Bitmap, Text Media Graphics Software

Canvas has always been slightly ahead of its time -- the first to integrate drawing, image editing, document design, presentations and web graphics design into one program. Not to mention Canvas's breakthrough Sprite technology which made it possible to apply transparency and layer effects to any object, bitmap image or text.

Canvas 8 includes over 100 new features and enhancements including new and improved Bézier curve selection and manipulation tools. New real-time Pixel View of your vector art. Enhanced context-sensitive pop-up menus, and more of them. Instant drawing tool selection with a single key press. A new Favorite Inks palette and improved color managers. One-click docking bar and window management commands. A manual web image slicer, new text tools, new effects.

Use Canvas 8's new Sequence recorder/player to capture tedious, multi-step effects and other repetitive tasks, and distill them into a single command you can play back later with absolute accuracy an infinite number of times. You can even share Sequences with others no matter what their platform might be.

Or use Canvas' new Scripting engine. Using AppleScript, Visual Basic, VB Script, JScript, or any other programming or scripting language, you can now automate downloads, connect with other scriptable applications, or process thousands of files for print or the Web without lifting a finger or breaking a sweat

And while Canvas has always been a most accommodating graphics software, new, easy-to-use DenebaShare? makes sharing digital photos and files a piece of cake. Plus you can password protect your files for absolute confidentiality.

So if you're the type of person with boundary issues, perhaps you should think twice before trying out the boundless capabilities of new Canvas 8. For the rest of you, we say more power to you, and hey, enjoy the ride.

New in Canvas 8:
• Under OS X.x, Canvas would display out of memory messages when using the Document Layout palette. This has been fixed.
• Drawing a line after selecting all of the options on the SmartMouse palette would cause Canvas to crash. This has been fixed.
• Draw any object in Canvas and save the file. Open Preferences and turn on Auto-Save with 1-minute intervals. Close Preferences and with the object selected choose Object > SpriteEffects > Add Effect > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Wait at least a minute and Canvas will crash. This has been fixed.
• In a Canvas document, zoom into an object at 200%. Select all and choose Edit > Copy Special > Copy Options. In the Embed EPS section, enter 300 dpi for the Rendering Resolution. Canvas would stop responding, thus forcing a restart. This has been fixed.
• Draw a circle and double-click it to place it in edit mode. Select the Sprite tool and click on it, Canvas will crash. This is fixed.
• Open the Strokes palette and minimize it. Docking the palette at this point would cause Canvas to crash.
• Opening a Canvas 8 for Windows document containing Web buttons, URL links, and macros causes the Mac version to crash. This has been fixed.
• Canvas was not utilizing kerning pair's information from TrueType fonts. Except for Open Type, Canvas will now recognize kerning pair's information from both TrueType and PostScript fonts.
• Our Image I/O filters will no longer require the Classic environment under OS X to save or import a document from Canvas.
• ClipArt - In previous versions of Canvas when placing a clipart file in the document, which would require a change of clipart CD, the application would not eject the current CD. This has been corrected.
• Copy/Paste - Pasting URL links from PowerPoint into Canvas would cause a crash. This has been fixed.
• Under OS X, Canvas would stop responding after copying an object using "Copy with EPS" and pasting it into Office X. This is now fixed.
• Saving a simple vector drawing as a Postscript file and then opening it back into Canvas would cause a crash. This has been fixed.
• Find - The Select button under the Find palette will sometimes disappear when the palette is accessed from the Docking bar. This is fixed.
• Import GIF - Canvas has a problem interpreting the color table of certain GIF files. This has been corrected.
• Object Properties - Double-clicking inside the Object Properties dialog while an object is selected would cause Canvas to crash. This has been fixed.
• Plug-Ins - Canvas would crash when loading the Canon Digital Camera Plug-in module version 3.9.0.4. This has been fixed.
• Print - With a Canvas document open, choose File > Print. Under the Select Output options, check either Save as PDF. Repeat the process, but this time choose PS and Canvas will crash. This has been fixed.
• Create multiple objects in a Canvas document. Place some of these objects outside of the printable area. Using a Lexmark T614 choose print selection within Canvas. The file will generate a print error. This has been fixed.
• Choose print preview from within a Canvas document. Select Canvas 8 under the print options drop-down menu. Select print preview again. Canvas will print the document instead of bringing print preview. This has been fixed.
• Canvas would not print to a Brother MFC 7300C printer. This is fixed.
• In a Canvas document, create a large enough text block to fill the entire page. Choose Show Page Breaks. Select Page Setup. Page Setup will not come up; and if you choose Print, the application will bring up an error message. This has been fixed.
• Create a 3 to 4 page document. Select Print and set print range to 3-4. Choose Print, the range setting is back to 1-999. Choosing Print will result in one copy of page 3 and three copies of page 4. This has been corrected.
• Printing Canvas documents to a Lexmark Z23 would cause Canvas to crash. This is now fixed.
• Canvas will not remember the Page Layout settings between Open/Close or Start/Quit when using an HP970 inkjet print driver. This is now fixed.
• Previous versions of Canvas would not allow a user to save custom print settings under the print dialog of OS X. This is now fixed.
• Save As DXF - Save a Canvas file using the DXF filter. Opening the DXF file back into Canvas will no longer cause Canvas to crash.
• Save As EPS - Save a Canvas document as EPS with a preview to your desktop. Minimize Canvas and look at the file. The file will not have a preview. This has been corrected.
• Saving a simple vector drawing as EPS with a black and white preview would not create a file. This has been fixed.
• No file is generated out of Canvas when saving a document as EPSF with Indexed, Grayscale, or Black & White previews. This is now fixed.
• Save a simple document as EPS. Open the document back into Canvas. The "Create Canvas Objects" option does not come up as described in the User's Guide. This is fixed.
• Save As IGES - Saving a caption text object as IGES will no longer cause Canvas to crash.
• Save As PDF - Some High-ASCII characters were getting lost when exporting as PDF with Embed Font and Compress text options selected. This has been corrected.
• Create a line with a double arrowhead attached to it. Save this file as PDF and open it in Acrobat. The line would display with a thicker pen width. This has been fixed.
• Save As PNG - Create an image and add a transparency mask. Export the image as PNG. The channel information in the PNG file is corrupted when viewed in Photoshop 6. This has been fixed.
• Save a simple vector based document as PNG. Import the file into PowerPoint. The file is blank. This is fixed.
• Save As PowerPoint - Under OS X Canvas was missing the PowerPoint filter. This version now displays it correctly under the Open dialog.
• Save As Illustrator - Saving a Canvas document as Illustrator with a TIFF preview would cause Canvas to crash. This has been fixed.
• Save As HTML - Center justified text offsets to the right side of the document when exported as HTML. This is fixed.
• Text - In a Canvas document create a text block large enough to fill the entire page. Hit the Esc key once to exit edit mode while leaving it selected. If you then try to scale the text box, Canvas will crash. This has been fixed.

Granite Digital Ships Smart Drive FireWire Enclosures

Granite Digital has announced it has begun shipping its new Smart Drive Series of FireWire enclosures. The Smart Drive Series includes low-profile, external storage enclosures with built-in LCD+keypad user interfaces.

"The built-in user interface is like having a technician in each box," said Frank Gabrielli, President of Granite Digital. "With traditional enclosures users find it really frustrating not knowing what's really happening. With our Smart Drive enclosures users see real-time performance, they see how everything is configured, and they can easily spot and fix problems before those problems cause trouble and aggravation. And our new Smart Drive external enclosure is by far the smallest and best looking case we've ever built."

The Smart Drive user interface incorporates a 2-line by 20 character LCD and a 2-button keypad. By default the user interface shows the enclosure's real-time status or performance. Using the keypad, users navigate menus offering information on the FireWire-IDE bridge, the hard disk, the FireWire connection, and the host computer. Additional diagnostic and utility menus allow testing, verifying, and even erasing the hard disk without a host computer.

We're planning to add more features for failure prediction, RAID, and even host application integration," said Vice President of Engineering Robert Botchek. "And since we have the best field update utility in the industry, our current customers will be able to download new firmware and keep their Smart Drives up to date."

Granite Digital's Field Update Utility is available for Apple (Nasdaq:AAPL) computers running OS X or OS 9 and for PCs running Microsoft's (Nasdaq:MSFT) Windows XP/2000/ME/98se operating systems. Granite Digital will be demonstrating the OS X version of its Field Update Utility at Macworld (booth #572), July 17-19, 2002.

Each Smart Drive enclosure uses a Granite Digital FireVue 1394-IDE bridge controller. Customers can order Smart Drives with or without 3.5" hard drives. FireVue bridge controllers use the industry-leading Oxford Semiconductor OXFW911; and Granite Digital's proprietary firmware and hardware enhancements enable unique features like ATA-6 compatibility for hard drives larger than 137GB.

El Gato Eye TV Digital Video Recorder Lets You Watch TV on your Mac

Eye TV Digital Video Recorder frees you from TV schedules. Find shows you want to see and watch them when you want to watch them. Pause live television. Skip Commercials. Record your favorite shows permanently using your CD burner. EyeTV will change the way you watch television.

EyeTV’s integrated program guide helps you find shows of interest using keyword searches. Enter the name (or just part of the name) of your favorite actor, type of show (sports, comedy, action) or show title and let EyeTV find out when it is playing next.

EyeTV includes a 124-channel cable-ready TV tuner and MPEG encoder to digitize and send TV signals to your Mac over a standard USB cable (included). EyeTV software then displays the TV show in a resizable window or you can even watch full screen.

EyeTV can do everything a VCR does without the hassle of bulky VHS tapes. EyeTV only needs 650 MBs of disk space to store an hour of video on your hard disk. If you want a permanent copy, use your CD recorder to burn a VideoCD that is playable in your home DVD player.

EyeTV gives you the freedom to attend to interruptions without missing your favorite shows. You can pause whatever you're watching, whether it's a live television broadcast or a recorded show, and then resume watching whenever you're ready.

EyeTV is compatible with the Keyspan Digital Media Remote. The install CD includes a Keyspan key mapping file which can be imported into the Keyspan Digital Media Remote software. This will automatically configure your Keyspan remote for use with EyeTV. The EyeTV User's Guide has complete instructions on how to add a Keyspan Digital Media Remote for use with EyeTV.

EyeTV lets you see more or less. You can use the Jump button to skip over the stuff you don’t want to see, like commercials or use the Instant Replay button to watch a favorite scene over and over . . . Digital Video Recording (DVR) allows you to record TV programs directly onto your Mac’s hard drive instead of videotape. It is just like a VCR without the clutter and hassle of bulky VHS tapes. You can watch recorded shows whenever you like, and use Pause, Reverse, Fast Forward, Skip Ahead, and Instant Replay.
