OSX
OS X Odyssey 145 -- Capture Me Screen Shot Utility

Monday, July 15, 2002

By Applelinks Contributing Editor Charles W. Moore

I’m not terribly enchanted with OS X’s screen capture facilities -- either the Grab utility or the keyboard commands. What’s there works, but I miss the OS nine feature of Caps Lock + Command + Shift + 4, which gives you a cleanly cropped snapshot of an open window, which is the mode I most often use in the classic OS for obtaining article illustrations. Nor does OS X support adding the Control key to the screen shot key sequence to copy the captured image to the Clipboard.

There are a number of third-party screen capture utilities available, the most popular being Ambrosia Software’s $29 Snapz Pro X, which offers a versatile range of screen capture options.

A new, freeware OS X screen capture utility, Capture Me, was released by Chimoosoft last week, and I downloaded it (795k) and checked it out over the weekend.

Capture Me is a simple program, but it adds several useful enhancements to the built-in screen capture features of OS X, and I prefer it to Grab. The way it works is when you open the program, a white box appears.

You then position the box over the window or area of the screen you want to capture, drag it to the desired coverage dimensions, click inside the box, and select from several save options in the File menu.

Capture Me allows you to save screen captures a in 10 different formats, including JPEG., TIFF, PNG, and PICT, and it offers a variety of options in the save dialog for each file type. You can also scale, resize, or invert your captured image before saving, and copy it to the Clipboard.

Another Capture Me function allows you to take a screen shot of just the active menu bar using the command in the Capture menu.

I found that Capture Me worked well. It’s not Snapz Pro, but it’s it’s free, and a useful addition to the basic OS X screen capture capabilities.

It would be nice if the selection box was transparent or translucent, but for capturing open windows, which is usually what I’m interested in, it’s opacity didn’t prove a big problem.

Capture Me Features:
• Floating capture window - click in it to capture what’s behind it • Ability to scale your capture
• Invert
• Save as with several formats
• Copy to clipboard

Yellow Dog

From Rino M. Dattilo

Charles,

Was kind of “surf’n” and ran across again Yellowdog Linux. I have none, zero, experience with Linux and saw that you have by reading your ventures. What do you think of it when it is up against OS X? How “fast” is it on your Pismo?

There seems to be a plethora of software, koffice and KDE, and such. I don’t know, also, what the learning curve is. Don’t get me wrong, I love my Mac, but is all that glitters gold in the Linux tux?

Value your opinion, Rino

PS: The Gnome bible program looks really nice too, and free software is tempting, but do you get what you pay for?

___

Hi Rino;

I have YDL installed on my WallStreet 233 MHz, not the Pismo. It’s fast enough, but comparisons with OS X are difficult. It’s a lot different than the Mac OS. I haven’t used it enough to claim any real proficiency. I expect that once you climbed the learning curve (fairly steep if you’re a Mac user) it could be quite efficient, and I think it’s probably a pretty good solution for folks whose Macs aren’t supported by OS X. And it does come with a ton of bundled applications, making it a cheap solution as well.

However, if you’re a Mac person, and have a supported machine, I would advise going with OS X. It’s a pretty cool OS, and while there are some differences from the Classic OS, it’s still the Mac.

I haven’t tried the Gnome Bible program.

Thanks - you pretty much answered my questions. I am NOT interested in a learning curve, and the Linux sites give all these instruction at the command line. I am sure for them it is easy, but the reason I left the pc was for simplicity.

I love X, it is the speed at times that gets frustrating. I hope that Jaguar lives up to its name. Though I like the idea of iChat, and such, it is speeeed I am looking for, without having to upgrade a 1.5 year old machine (Pismo 500, 640 rm, 60gig). I would have like to see that energy go into speed (if there isn’t an improvement). I am not looking for snappier, I desire some pop. I have a lot of patience for people, but my computer, I fall shot time and time again.

Thank you again for your input - Rino
