OSX
OS X Odyssey 134 - Okito Thesaurus 0.5 For Cocoa Mini Review

Friday, June 14, 2002

By Applelinks Contributing Editor Charles W. Moore

Back when I could still type reasonably comfortably, and did most of my composing on-screen at the keyboard, I used to use the thesauri in Nisus Writer, and prior to that in Word 5.1, quite extensively. However, for the past couple of years, nerveand soft tissue pain in my hands and arms has obliged me to do almost all composing of anything longer than a paragraph or two longhand with a pen and paper, and then transcribe it to digital text using dictation software. I'm a writer more than an orator, and the creative juices just don't flow very well when my mouth is in gear. Consequently, I have reverted to mainly using print dictionaries and Roget's Thesaurus for word references.

However, the new, and thus far rather sketchily described, Inkwell handwriting recognition feature in OS X Jaguar may once again allow me to do composition on screen. We'll see. Anyway, if that be the case, having a good electronic thesaurus around will be very useful to me, and of course it already is for the vast majority of non-disabled users who do on-screen composition.

With Okito Thesaurus you get a fast electronic thesaurus that automatically integrates with any service aware application including Okito Composer, Mail, TextEdit, or OmniWeb. I tried Okito Thesaurus out last night using its companion application, the lusciously attractive Okito Composer, but it should work just as well in any application that supports Cocoa services.

Installation was easy . I just double -clicked the installer icon in the mounted disk image , and ran through the standard of Apple 0 SX installer rigmarole. It was then necessary to log out and log back in again to make the thesaurus command appear in the Cocoa Services menu. I tried Okito Thesaurus out last night using its companion application Okito Composer. But it should work just as well in TextEdit or any other application that supports Cocoa services.

Using the thesaurus is easy. The word lookup motif owes much to the NeXT/Mac OS X Column View browser convention. Just highlight a word in your favorite application and select "Find in Thesaurus" from the Services menu. When you select any synonym in Okito Thesaurus, the synonym for that word will be shown right next to it in the Word Browser.

The thesaurus shows similar words to the one you selected in a word browser. If you select a word from this list, synonyms for that word will be displayed in the next column and so on.

You can copy words from the thesaurus by selecting text in the word field at the bottom of the window and dragging it to your document. A future release of Okito Thesaurus will allow you to use copy and paste and to drag directly from the word browser.

Features
• Clean, easy-to-use interface
• Contains synonyms for over 20,000 words
• Find even more related words with the Word Browser.

Future features planned for Okito Thesaurus include:
• Improved support for different forms of words and more vocabulary.
• Cut, Copy and Paste support
• Better integration with Mac OS X applications.
• Public framework to allow other developers to access and extend Okito Thesaurus services.

Another nice piece of work from Charles Jolley.

Requirements
Okito Thesaurus requires at least a Power Macintosh G3 running Mac OS X 10.1 or later.

System requirements:
• Mac OS X 10.01 or higher

Okito Thesaurus is currently a free Beta

Loss of Network Connectivity After Updating to Mac OS X 10.1.5 Workaround

A new Apple Knowledge Base article notes;

After installing Mac OS X Update 10.1.5, your computer may lose its network or Internet connection.

Your computer does not connect to the Internet, or to your local area network (LAN). This is noticeable immediately after startup. You may also notice one or both of these symptoms: 1. IP address, subnet mask, and router address have all been set to "255.255.255.255". 2. DHCP configuration is not available as a choice in the Network preference pane.

Follow these steps to resolve the issue:

Important: You must be logged in as an Admin user. 1. Click the Finder icon in the Dock.
2. Choose Go to Folder from the Go menu.
3. Type: /Library/Preferences/
4. Click Go.
5. In the Finder window, locate the file named: com.apple.PowerManagement.plist 6. Drag this file to the Trash.
7. Restart the computer.

Re: Hidden Photos

From Tobias S. Buckell

You said you were curious to know where these pictures of the beach screensavers were taken. I'm pretty sure they were taken in the British Virgin Islands. At least, the pictures of the beaches with great boulders and islands in the near distance were, because I grew up playing around some of those very boulders, so imagine my surprise when I saw them on my screensaver. I know I'm not tripping either, because my stepdad called me one evening asking me if I'd tried the screensaver, because he thought the boulders were from the Baths, in Virgin Gorda, BVI, as well.

Some of the other pictures (the island and palms off in the clear water by itself) might be Anegada, a small reef-island to the north of Virgin Gorda.

Hi Tobias;

I suspected that it was in the Caribbean somewhere. My wife was born and brought up in Bermuda, and I've been there many times, but it the OS X pix don't look like Bermuda (sand is too white and the rocks are wrong for starters). I tentatively guessed the Florida Keys.

My wife's father came from Turks & Caicos, which I have not visited, but I've seen lots of pictures, and there is a bit of a resemblance, but too much vegetation in the Screensaver photos to be T&C.

I've never been to the BVI, but have seen plenty of photos in cruising books and articles, and now that you mention it........
