Space.App 0.8: Virtual Workspaces For Mac OS X

Space.app provides up to 16 "virtual workspaces" for Mac OS X" to help you to organize your use of the desktop. You can define hot keys for switching workspaces and can also define one workspace as "sticky" so that its applications appear in all other workspaces as well.

Space.app is provided free of charge for individual and commercial use under the QPL (version 1.0) and may be redistributed according to the terms of that license.

Known issues:
Switching between workspaces while applications are still in the process of hiding or unhiding may cause those applications to appear in different workspaces than you intended.

OmniWeb users: Getting an "address filtered" error on download?
In Preferences/Privacy, remove or modify the "ads...net" pattern.

New i Version 0.8
• moved to hybrid interface: dock menu and palette
• Finder windows behave as other applications
• added global "hot keys"

Carbon Copy Cloner

Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) is a cloning utility developed with AppleScript Studio. The purpose of Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) is to assist you in backing up or moving your Mac OS X installation from one partition to another as easily as possible. The tools you need are already installed with Mac OS X; CCC makes using them easy! Check out this comprehensive guide to backing up and cloning Mac OS X for more details on the plumbing behind the process.

System Requirements:
• Mac OS 10.1.2 with the BSD subsystem installed (which is installed by default).

Supported configurations:
• Local (i.e., not over a network connection), HFS+ formatted partition or hard drive.
• Mounted disk image. Cloning to a disk image will (obviously), not yield a bootable volume unless you use Apple Software Restore to restore the image to a physical partition or disk. *ASR has a 4GB limit. See my Apple Software Restore instructions for more details on this method.
• Firewire disks including iPods
• CCC will not backup directly to CDs or DVD-R discs, though you can backup to an appropriately sized disk image, then burn the image to disc with Toast or Disk Copy.
• Limited support for Beige G3s (Old World Machines). May have to install OS X to target disks before cloning to yield a bootable volume.

Instructions:
1. Select a source disk from the Source popup menu. This will populate the "Items to be copied" table with the list of files at the root level of this volume**.
2. You may remove items from the "Items to be copied" list that you do not want moved to the new drive.
3. Select a target disk. Target disk selection will be easiest if your drives have unique names.
4. Indicate whether you would like to remove files from the target disk before cloning. There are two options: 1) don't remove any files (won't remove any files from the target disk) and 2) remove like-named items: any folder with a similar name on the target partition will be removed, regardless of the type of files you have in it. So if you have an "Applications (Mac OS 9)" on your source and target, the target "Applications (Mac OS 9)" will be deleted.
5. You can also choose whether to recreate the Darwin links and folders (etc, var, cores, tmp, dev, and Volumes) and whether to bless the System on the clone when copying is finished. If you're just backing up some of your stuff, turn these off to reduce the clutter they make.
6. Click on the lock to provide your administrative password (required to preserve permissions and ownership of System files), then click on the clone button.

Cloning can take as little as 5-10 minutes if you don't have many files and have two physical disks to more than an hour if you have many GBs of data or are transferring to a partition on the same disk as the original. Be patient and let CCC do its job. You can do other things while CCC is running (go ahead and minimize it), but because this is a disk-intensive process, some activities may be less responsive, such as getting folder listings in the Finder. When CCC is finished, you should be able to select the target disk in the Startup Disk preference pane and bootup from the clone.

• The following files/folders at the root level are unnecessary to backup and are automatically removed from the "Items to be copied" list: "dev", "Volumes", "Network", "etc", "cores", "tmp", "var", "automount", ".vol", "mach", "mach.sym", ".DS_Store", "Cleanup At Startup", "TheVolumeSettingsFolder", "File Transfer Folder", "Trash", ".Trashes", "TheFindByContentFolder".

The only changes that CCC will make to your original drive is to unlock all the files to avoid conflicts with the ditto command. In general, this is not a problem unless you specifically want a file to be locked -- files that are locked on OS X were probably locked under OS 9. There aren't any locked files in a standard installation of Mac OS X. File locking is usually just a method of preventing a file from being deleted or modified. While locked files are usually just an annoyance, some applications like Adobe GoLive use them for workgroup file management. You may re-lock files when CCC is finished, but if you have several hundred files that you want to stay locked, you may want to look for an alternative to CCC. Also, Netboot servers lock the Netboot images, so you will want to pay close attention to these files when CCC has finished cloning. You may also choose to not unlock files on the source, but CCC will fail if it encounters a locked file.

You select a station via the maps presented by Mr. Tides. The two types of stations are distinguished by the color of the dot on the map, blue for tide and yellow for current. MacMachBegone! 1.0.6 Makes Those Pesky Mach Kernel Files Invisible In Mac OS 9

Every time Mac OS X starts up it recreates the 'mach' and 'mach.sym' files and they become visible next time you boot Mac OS 9. This is a very simple program which makes them (and a couple more) invisible so that they don't clutter up the hard disk. It is very fast (you hardly notice it launch) and has a very small file size.

The program makes the following files/folders invisible (if they exist):
• automount
• mach
• mach.sym
• mach_kernel
• .DS_Store
• .FBCIndex
• .FBCLockFolder

MacMachBegone also looks for a file called '.hidden' in the root directory of each volume and makes any files/folders listed in there invisible as well.

New in this version:
• Looks at the OS X .hidden files

System requirements:
• PPC
• Mac OS 9 to Run
• Mac OS X Installed

uControl1.0.4 Remaps The Caps Lock Key To Control

Tired of hitting all the wrong modifier keys on your laptop to get that simple control sequence? Are you forced to drag a keyboard around with you that has the control key in the right place? The place that Apple mistakenly put the caps lock key. Take control back!

uControl maps your control key to it's rightfully intended place on your laptops keyboard; the place thats currently occupied by the oft-unused caps lock key. No more finger acrobatics are required for using control-intensive Unix applications. Caps lock functionality is still available by pressing the Apple modifier key in conjunction with the caps lock key.

uControl also remaps the enter key positioned right next to the spacebar to a command key, due to many user requests. Upon the next iteration of development, I plan to include a user definable remapping of special keys. Currently, the only way to acquire different remaps is by recompiling.

New in this version:
• Fixed problem that was causing a kernel panic with the new update to Mac OS 10.1.5.

System requirements:
• Mac OS X 10.1.5

uControl is freeware
