I had planned to report on Eudora 5.1.1 for OS X in a OS X Odyssey today, but the installer wouldn’t cooperate. It seemed to start up OK, but once the “Preparing for installation” dialog appeared, so did this spinning beach ball of death, and that was it. I aborted three attempts to install last evening with the Force Quit command, and a fourth attempt this morning remained in progress for 26 minutes, then “Unexpectedly Quit.” I tried logging out and logging back in again after my first failed attempt, but that didn’t help. A note on the Eudora Web page says:
However, my hard drive is not formatted UFS, and it would be nice if they had defined “ take forever” a bit more precisely. I think this one needs a bit more work. Guess I'll have to wait for that "future installer." On a more positive note, I also downloaded the Eudora 5.1.1 installer for OS 8.1 - 9.x and it worked perfectly. The installation over my existing Eudora 5.1.1 beta 22 went quickly and with no hassle. There is no significant change in the interface (if any at all) which has been around since Eudora 4.3, and still owes a lot to the legacy versions of Eudora. But if it ain’t broke; don’t fix it. I’m not a big toolbar fan, and keep the toolbar turned off in Eudora, but if you like toolbars, this program has a good one.
Personally, one of the things I like best about Eudora is that it stays out of the way when you are not doing anything with it. Interface-wise, the only major change I would advocate is a more convenient means of toggling the “Personalities” window, and a way to select from multiple accounts for a default e-mail check without checking the whole kit and kaboodle. Cool features include Eudora’s powerful search engine, which is the best and fastest I’ve used in any email client.Therre is also a built-in spell-checker, on-the-fly if you prefer, and automatic name completion. Multiple email account support is excellent, and multithreading allows you to work uninterrupted while sending and receiving email in the background. Several word processor functions are included, such as the ability to choose font, formatting and color settings. First impressions of performance with Eudora 5.1.1 in OS 9.1 are that it seems noticeably faster than 5.1.1b22 or the 5.1 build, even though there is no mention of speed improvements in the release notes. Whatever, I’ll take it. Menus and message windows open much more snappily then they did in previous versions. Everything seems to work nicely. Eudora can be licensed in three ways -- Sponsored mode, Paid mode and Light mode. All three modes are accessible within the same application once you’ve installed and launched it. In Sponsored mode, which is what I use, Eudora displays small ads, which I find inoffensive. By allowing Eudora to display ads, you get the full power of Eudora for free. After a trial period, Eudora will ask you to profile yourself to continue to use the full free Eudora. This enables Eudora to display ads more relevant to your interests.
If you opt for Paid mode, Eudora does not display ads, and you get the full power of Eudora. If you have a paid and registered version of Eudora 5.0 that is less than twelve months old, you can upgrade to 5.1.1 at no additional charge. Eudora costs $39.95 in Paid mode, or $29.95 to upgrade from versions 4.0-4.2. In Light mode, Eudora has fewer features, but is free of charge and without ads. Specific changes in Eudora 5.1.1 include: Disable URL Access by default because certain downloads cause it to crash in Mac OS X 10.1.3. Use to re-enable. System requirements:
