Apple Deal Nifty but Complex

Monday, May 27, 2002

By Senior Editor John H. Farr

Please pardon us for looking a gift horse in the mouth, but when we went to look at this Apple Store Anniversary "Great Deal," it took several long stares to figure out what the deal actually was. Now that we have, we can tell you about it.

Here's what we think the deal is: if you buy a new, used, or "refreshed" Mac between now and June 29 and you buy an AppleCare Protection Plan at the same time, you can apply for a rebate of roughly $200 on one of five other products that must be purchased at the same time. You also have to buy all of these things at one of the Apple retail stores in the fifty United States, but Florida doesn't count (?). Here are the full Terms & Conditions:

"Terms and Conditions The following terms and conditions govern this offer: You must purchase and take possession of qualifying products from May 22, 2002, through June 29, 2002.

You must purchase your products from the Apple retail stores located in the fifty United States (except Florida).

Qualifying Products: All new, used, and refreshed Apple computers. The AppleCare Protection Plan, part numbers: iMac, M8288LL/A; iBook, M8289LL/A; Power Mac, M8290LL/A; PowerBook, M8291LL/A.

The following products: Microsoft Office Full Version, part number T4119LL/A; Microsoft Office Upgrade Version, part number T4117LL/A; Canon S820 Color Inkjet Photo Printer, part number T4527LL/A; Palm m130 Handheld, part number T4823LL/A; HP DeskJet 920c Printer, part number T4649LL/A; HP 318xi Digital Camera, part number T4124LL/A.

You will receive a rebate on your purchase of no more than one qualifying third-party product per Apple computer purchased between the specified dates.

The envelope enclosing your completed original coupon, proof of purchase, and UPC/bar code labels must be postmarked by July 15, 2002, and received by July 29, 2002.

The offer is valid while supplies last.

You must be an end-user purchaser, and not a reseller, to obtain this promotional offer.

This offer is not valid in conjunction with any other Apple or Hewlett-Packard offer or promotion, except as otherwise specifically permitted by the terms and conditions.

This promotion is valid with the following concurrent Apple promotions: Big Deal, Go Wireless, Together at Last, Music On $100 Off, and Powerful Offer.

To receive your rebate, you must provide all of the following:

1. A completed original, unaltered coupon, which you will receive at the time of purchase.

2. A proof of purchase consisting of an itemized, dated sales receipt showing the qualifying products purchased, the Apple retail store address, your name and address, the serial numbers of the qualifying products, and the prices you paid for the qualifying products. (Note: Order acknowledgements, packing slips, and purchase order copies do not qualify.)

3. The manufacturers' UPC/bar code labels (including cardboard backing) cut from all qualifying product boxes. (Note: Only the manufacturers' UPC/bar code labels, part numbers, serial numbers if shown, and product descriptions if shown will be accepted; Apple retail store UPC stickers will not be accepted in lieu of the manufacturers' labels.)

If you are submitting more than one claim because you purchased more than one Apple computer, you must submit each claim on a different coupon. You may not submit more than one claim on a coupon.

Lost, late, or misdirected mail is not the responsibility of Apple Computer, Inc., or its agents.

Allow eight to ten (8-10) weeks from the date your claim is processed to receive your rebate.

This offer is void where prohibited or restricted by law.

This offer is valid in conjunction with Education Individual purchase programs. Apple's Education pricing and promotional offers supersede this offer.

Apple is not responsible for printing errors.

For each claim you submit, you should keep copies of these terms and conditions, your completed coupon, your proof of purchase, and the UPC/bar code labels for your records.

Invalid submissions will not be returned and become the property of Apple.

If you do not take delivery of your qualifying products at an Apple retail store, you must do so at an address located within the fifty United States or the District of Columbia.

Rebate checks must be mailed to an address within the fifty United States or District of Columbia.

Apple reserves the right to change the terms and conditions, substitute premiums of equal or greater value, or end the offer at any time without notice.

Comments: Oh for the good old days of "33 Percent Off!" Bar codes, coupons, register slips, blood tests, must do this, must do that... this is not calculated to make us really feel like we're getting a deal, this is work. But $200 off on a $300 product is a good thing. If you're heading down to the Apple Store and want one of the qualifying third-party products, this is your baby, for sure.
