In the past we've reported on a common practice whereby adult Web site marketers snap up expired domains with so-called "link equity," i.e. traffic resulting from existing links and user bookmarks. We have belatedly learned that MacEdition has a program to prevent your expiring Mac Web domain from exploitation and want to tell you about it.

Due to the loyalty of the user base, expiring Mac domains are particularly sought after, although any and all expired domains may be snapped up to redirect surfers to adult content sites. What MacEdition's parent company (NMR Media, LLC) has proposed amounts to a genteel, low-rent buyout that will at the very least keep your Mac domain from falling into the wrong hands.

"If you are responsible for a Mac Web domain that you're going to let expire or that you otherwise no longer want, please contact info@nmrmedia.com. Tell us about your site, the traffic, the content, etc., and what you'd be looking to get out of the site, and NMR Media might arrange to protect the domain.

We're not going to do this for every Web domain that has 'Mac' in the name, but there are several domains and archived sites out there that represent the history of the independent Mac Web that are better served than by being 'porned out to pasture.'"
