Iomega Announces New Portable And External Hard Drive Product Lines
Iomega Announces New Portable And External Hard Drive Product Lines Iomega Corporation has introduced two new lines of external hard drives designed to make security, recovery and data storage easy: the sleek new Iomega HDD Portable Hard Drive in 20GB and 30GB capacities, and the high-capacity Iomega HDD External Hard Drive in 40GB, 80GB, and 120GB capacities. "Iomega is delivering the power that professionals and advanced home users need for whole-system backups, easy system recovery, and convenient data storage and protection," said Tim Dammon, product general manager, Iomega Corporation. "Our customers want flexibility and convenience in a product that not only travels well between computer systems, but also has the added bonus of moving easily between USB-based systems and FireWire-based systems. Iomega's new portable and external hard drives are the next generation in terms of data security and hard drive throughput for mobile users and others with growing storage needs." Iomega's new drives for Windows and Macintosh users are hot-swappable and plug-and-play, which gives users the convenience of connecting the peripheral to a desktop or laptop computer without rebooting or having to install the device. With an optional interface module, Iomega's new hard drives can be switched between high-bandwidth USB 2.0 and FireWire interfaces. Actual user transfer rates as high as 21MB per second (Portable Hard Drive) make the new drive platforms practical and affordable for editing video and image files, developing business presentations and working with large data sets. Iomega QuikSync software, which provides automatic on-the-fly backup, is included with both the Iomega HDD Portable Hard Drive and the Iomega HDD External Hard Drive. Disaster recovery software to back up and retrieve data, system files and registry information is also provided with both products. Iomega's easy-to-use software, which distinguishes Iomega's new hard drive product lines from other portable hard drives, provides for easy, fast recovery of data loss from virus attacks, hackers, power interruption and accidental file deletion. The Iomega HDD Portable Hard Drive, now available at retail, builds on the ground-breaking Iomega Peerless drive. Weighing only eight ounces (231g) in capacities of 20GB or 30GB, the Iomega HDD Portable Hard Drive's sleek design and detachable interface module combine high shock resistance with a mobile hard drive that is slim enough to fit in most shirt pockets and any laptop bag. The Iomega HDD Portable Hard Drive is rugged enough to withstand a drop from a 50-inch high shelf to industrial carpet - up to five times the drop height of other portable hard drives on the market today. The Iomega HDD External Hard Drive, expected to ship in May, gives the desktop user 40GB, 80GB, or 120GB of reliable storage. Each drive works with a USB 2.0 (backwards compatible with USB 1.1) or FireWire interface integrated into the cable. The Iomega HDD External Hard Drive also incorporates the same sleek style as the Iomega HDD Portable Hard Drive in a slightly taller profile (1.25" versus 0.75"). Like the Iomega HDD Portable Hard Drive, the Iomega HDD External Hard Drive's software package includes Iomega QuikSync software for automatic, on-the-fly backup and disaster recovery software developed by Iomega. The Iomega HDD Portable Hard Drive is available today. Configurations include the Iomega HDD 20GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive with a suggested list price of $199; the Iomega HDD 20GB FireWire Portable Hard Drive, $229; the Iomega HDD 30GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive, $259; and the Iomega HDD 30GB FireWire Portable Hard Drive, $279. To allow the same drive to be used between computer systems utilizing different interfaces, optional USB and FireWire interfaces with cables will be available in late May. The Iomega HDD External Hard Drive is expected to be available in May 2002. Configurations include the Iomega HDD 40GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive with a suggested list price of $199; the Iomega HDD 80GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive, $299; and the Iomega HDD 120GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive, $349. FireWire configurations of the Iomega HDD 80GB External Hard Drive and the Iomega HDD 120GB External Hard Drive will be available for $329 and $379, respectively. Adobe Announces FrameMaker 7.0 Adobe Systems Incorporated has announced a new version of FrameMaker(R), its powerful enterprise authoring and publishing solution. By making Extensible Markup Language (XML) easier to use, FrameMaker version 7.0 software allows corporations to take advantage of XML's ability to search, share and repurpose content across the enterprise. The new XML capabilities provide a comprehensive network publishing platform, allowing content creators to distribute information to multiple channels, including print, the Web and PDAs. Also announced today is the new Adobe FrameMaker Server, which gives companies the ability to produce personalized, data-driven content for output to print or Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF). In the past, FrameMaker offered powerful word-processing functionality for long documents, and FrameMaker +SGML included a full set of tools for structured authoring of valid SGML applications. Corporate users can now benefit from the simplicity of FrameMaker and the power of FrameMaker+SGML combined into one product. Users can choose to work in the structured environment to address single-source information publishing needs and create valid XML files, or choose a simpler interface to create well-formed XML files for general word-processing usage. FrameMaker gives corporate users the ability to easily create, edit and import valid XML content in full WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) mode with real-time validation and context-sensitive guided authoring. Once valid, the XML content can be searched, shared and repurposed across the enterprise, integrating disparate systems and processes. For users new to XML, FrameMaker provides a variety of starter templates that enables them to work with industry-standard xDocBook and xHTML DTDs (Document Type Descriptions) and map XML elements to tables, graphics, footnotes, cross-references and index markers. "FrameMaker 7.0 supports us as we move in the direction of XML and consider WebDAV integration," said Evan Olson, Online Products Developer at Fujitsu Network Communications. "The new features combine traditional FrameMaker benefits -- advanced book-building capabilities and easy output of files to formats such as Adobe PDF and HTML -- with the flexibility of XML for sharing and reusing information company-wide. Through the use of templates, FrameMaker 7.0 enables efficient publishing of a single source document to multiple channels, including print, Adobe PDF, the Web, eBooks, PDAs and more. The included WebWorks(R) Publisher Standard Edition 7.0 software from Quadralay provides features for publishing to HTML, Palm Reader and other handheld formats. Support for Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) allows the integration of high quality and interactive vector graphics for Web publishing. FrameMaker also supports Adobe's XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform) and WebDav (World Wide Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning), which streamlines document collaboration and content sharing. XMP gives Adobe applications a common framework that standardizes the exchange of metadata across publishing workflows. Unlike other XML-based solutions, FrameMaker 7.0 enables users to easily publish documents in XML format to PDF and print. FrameMaker also outputs tagged Adobe PDF which means documents created with the application can be viewed on mobile devices like PDAs. Tagged Adobe PDF files are also accessible to people with visual disabilities because they can be read appropriately by leading screen reader software applications, which synthesize text to speech. New Server Version Adobe's new FrameMaker Server software gives companies the ability to extract existing content housed in databases, document management systems and XML repositories to be manipulated in FrameMaker. The Frame Development Kit (FDK) provides a comprehensive way to integrate FrameMaker with server-based systems ranging from Web applications to legacy mainframes. FrameMaker Server is incredibly flexible, handling text and graphics in a variety of formats with multi-language support.
System requirements:
Adobe FrameMaker 7.0 and Adobe FrameMaker Server 7.0 will be available in the second (calendar) quarter of 2002 to customers in the United States, Europe and Canada through Adobe Authorized Resellers and the Adobe Store at http://www.adobe.com. Estimated street price for FrameMaker 7.0 desktop version will be US$799 for the full product with a special 90-day post ship upgrade offer (Mac and Windows only) of US$209 (US$349 thereafter). There are a variety of invisible files, settings, and parameters that the OS X file system uses to locate files, free disk space, and for other maintenance and management routines. These are known collectively as the Volume Structure. The Catalog and Disk Directory are parts of the volume structure. Damage to these and other critical structures can result in lost or damaged data that could require a complete reformat of the media. Reformatting a drive destroys ALL data on the media. Drive 10 can scan your drives and repair problems related to the numerous structures that are necessary for the volume to operate correctly. If problems are found, Drive 10 can often repair these problems and bring your drive back to life in only a few minutes. When Drive 10 finds a problem, it will build a new set of volume structures instead of patching the old structures like other utilities do. This is the surest and safest method of recovering your valuable data. While Drive 10 is a new product, it is derived from TechTool Pro, Micromats world-class diagnostic and repair utility. Using TechTools time-tested routines as well as some new routines developed exclusively for OS X, Drive 10 offers many tools for checking and repairing any drive on your system (see test list for details).
