WWDC 2002 Information

WWDC 2002 for IT Professionals

Too often many people have the mistaken impression that WWDC is only for developers. While the focus is on development tools, there is a tremendous amount of information on the inner workings of Macintosh hardware and Software that would be of direct benefit to the IT professionals who make their living keeping these systems living and breathing. Combine this with the new emphasis on web development tools at WWDC, and you have a conference that will satisfy the majority of IT professionals.

Another benefit to attending WWDC is the opportunity to meet with many of the Apple developers who are building not only the next generation applications, but the next generation of Mac OS X. You have an opportunity to give these developers real-world feedback on their work, playing an active role in ensuring that future products are even better at meeting your needs.

Here is a quick rundown of some of the sessions that might be interesting to those of us who support computers more than we program them.

AppleScript

AppleScript is an easy-to-use, approachable, English-like language that allows you to control nearly everything your computer can do. With AppleScript, you can automate repetitive tasks, customize applications, and even control complex workflow without the use of a mouse, keyboard, or other input device to manipulate menus, buttons, and other interface items.

Scripting is a great way to automate many administrative tasks and the new AppleScript Studio promises to make it even easier.

Sessions cover the following topics:

  • Overview
  • Cocoa Scripting
  • AppleScript Studio

Darwin

Darwin is the UNIX-based, open-source foundation of Mac OS X. Darwin integrates a number of technologies, most importantly Mach 3.0 operating-system services based on 4.4BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution), high-performance networking facilities, and support for multiple integrated file systems. Darwin also includes new technologies from Apple, such as I/O Kit, that take advantage of the advanced capabilities of an object-oriented framework.

The sessions should offer support professionals insight into the underlying OS and offer help in porting many of the useful UNIX administrative and support tools from the open-source community.

Sessions will cover the following topics:

  • Porting UNIX Apps to Mac OS X
  • Darwin Roadmap
  • The Darwin Kernel
  • I/O Kit
  • Core OS Networking
  • Open Source at Apple

Hardware

With iMac, iBook, Titanium PowerBook G4, Power Macintosh G4 with built-in SuperDrive, and technologies like AirPort wireless networking and Velocity Engine, Apple continues to lead the industry in hardware design innovation, performance, and ease of use. Apple also aggressively supports industry-standard technologies such as USB and FireWire that can help lower development and support costs and increase the performance of peripheral products.

While the primary focus of these sessions is in helping developers write hardware drivers, they are also good sessions for support professionals who want to keep up with the latest hardware technologies and the tricks to get the most out of each machine. Also, watch for smaller hardware/peripheral announcements in some of these sessions.

Sessions cover the following topics:

  • Apple Hardware Overview
  • USB
  • FireWire
  • Multiprocessing

Networking/Server

Built from the ground up to thrive in a networked environment, Mac OS X makes unprecedented use of technologies and standards that allow interaction with other platforms.

These sessions are the heart-and-soul of WWDC for support professionals. Server management is one of the most critical components of a healthy and productive network and these sessions are designed to let you get the most from your Mac OS Server installations.

Sessions cover the following topics:

  • Networking Solutions Overview
  • Mac OS X Server Platform
  • Server Services
  • Customizing and Configuring NetBoot
  • Wireless

Security

Mac OS X provides a number of system-level security, authentication, and cryptographic services that can be used by developers to build security into their applications.

If you aren't making the effort to secure your Mac OS systems, you are leaving yourself open to a major business disaster. Mac OS X fundamentally changes the security model of the Mac OS, and it is critical the systems administrators fully understand the capabilities of the OS and how to use them.

Sessions cover the following topics:

  • Common Data Security Architecture (CDSA) API
  • CDSA and Secure Transport
  • Certificates in Mac OS X
  • Keychain
  • Authorization API
  • Authentication
  • Kerberos
