Things are starting to heat up on the operating system front. According to ZDNet News, a multi-million dollar advertising campaign dissing Unix will soon appear in a magazine, Web page, or television commercial near you. Microsoft's contribution to the scheme is so far undisclosed, although Unisys is allegedly planning to spend $25 million. The advertising campaign is on behalf of Unisys' high-end servers and the Microsoft software that runs on them. Ad copy so far released describes Unix in very unflattering terms. A Sun spokesperson had this rejoinder: "As for Unix being 'inflexible,' 'expensive,' and 'complex,' we feel those are terms much better suited to the closed and proprietary world of Windows." Comments: You know what other operating sytem is Unix-based, of course. Apple is so far not a threat to anyone else in the high-end database server market, but if a little negative PR rubs off, would Microsoft object? We'd like to note for the record that Unisys isn't exactly operating from a position of strength here, having only sold a few hundred of its ES7000 servers. Can millions of dollars in advertising turn this situation around? Stay tuned!
