They're still at it in Augusta. You can read the full story of the current outlook for that $25 million contract with Apple in the Lewiston Sun Journal. When we first heard that not everyone in Maine was happy with the deal, which is supposed to provide all the state's seventh and eighth grade students and teachers with networked iBooks, we started looking around for anti-Macintosh sentiments. However, a careful reading of the above article about the ongoing legislative drama reveals no such bias. Instead, at least as far as we can tell, the main issue is the $25 million itself. There have been cuts proposed in social programs in Maine. Lawmakers are loathe to go along with these and at the same time appropriate extra money for laptops. Governor King is part of the problem, too: part of the arrangement with the legislature called for the governor to raise $15 million of the total on his own. According to the Sun Journal article, King is not being forthcoming about the progress of his fundraising, which raises uncertainty about just how much money the state will be committed to spend for the program.
