One of these days we'll get the editorial 8600's second hard drive outfitted with the latest version of OS X and we'll be able to comment more intelligently on things like Rob McNair-Huff's rather depressing look at the current array of OS X-compatible Web browsers. His main gripe is that "every Web browser available under OS X is a compromise." The list of OS X browsers so far includes versions of Internet Explorer, OmniWeb, Mozilla, Netscape, iCab, and Opera. (We're not adding the version numbers because Rob doesn't include them all in his article.) It's a little disheartening to read how one renders speedily but slows down and crashes after a long session, another is OK but the Java plug-in doesn't work on Powerbooks (?), and so on. For the record, he likes Internet Explorer but wishes it weren't from Microsoft and that it adhered more closely to standards. He rates OmniWeb, the OS X-only browser, second-best. He also likes it because it has spell checking support, which he says is useful for Weblogs. Our headline refers to the fact that one or the other of these apps always seems to be crashing on Rob, who evidently is employed managing message boards for Lycos. Lycos or rather the Java client Lycos uses for its Lycos Communities is also part of the problem, we gather. In fact, Java capability is the primary focus of Rob's comparison testing, and Internet Explorer is the only browser that satisfies his requirements in this regard. Comments: On the other hand -- a big other hand -- we know longtime Mac users running OS X exclusively who rave about OmniWeb, iCab, or the latest version of Netscape. Since there are plenty of sites out there using one Java client or another, we have to conclude that there is more than one way to skin a cat. Besides, taste has to count for something. Rest assured that as soon as we're using OS X on a daily basis, we'll have a favorite browser too, but we bet it won't have a darned thing to do with handling Java.
