A Penguin Angle on OS X (Ox?) From MacWorld

Linux Journal's Senior Editor Doc Searls has posted an interesting report on MacWorld Expo from the Linux perspective.

Searls says he ran into so many acquaintances from the Linux orbit on the show floor that for a moment he "thought I was at a LinuxWorld Expo."

However, Searls notes,

"Given the changes in both markets,... a little confusion is understandable. The constituencies have begun to overlap. The foundation under Apple's OS X is BSD. Politics and rivalries aside, this attracts a lot of Linux weenies, not to mention UNIX heavies of varied provenance, including BSD guru Jordan Hubbard, who now works for Apple on the Darwin Project."

"In past years at Macworld my Linux Journal shirt would have seemed more out of place than a leisure suit. But this year it fits right in."

This is all to the good, IMHO. An OS X/Linux convergence will have a much better crack at cutting down Windows' pedestal a few notches.

Another comment:

"Microsoft often talks about its 'right to innovate.' Even if we grant that Microsoft does innovate on some things, its reputation is quite otherwise. Not so with Apple. When Steve Jobs listed nine Apple 'innovations' over the last year, it's hard not to grant the company a high degree of originality, even if one protests the company's proprietary tendencies."

The article ends with a somewhat whimsical discussion of why OS X needs an animal mascot, analogous to the Linux penguin. Someone suggested an ox. Well, when I was a young kid here in rural Nova Scotia, my next door neighbors had an ox. It was a good, honest, hardworking animal. There could be worse choices.

Other World Computing's Unsupported UtilityX Named Finalist for Macworld Editors' Choice Award for Best System Utility

Other World Computing (OWC) Wednesday announced that Ryan Rempel's Unsupported UtilityX 2.0 has been selected as a finalist for the 17th Annual Macworld Editors' Choice Award for the Best System Utility.

The awards were presented at Macworld Expo 2002 in San Francisco, Jan. 8, 2002.

http://www.macworld.com/2001/12/eddy/awards.html

"We are honored that the editors of Macworld selected Unsupported UtilityX as a finalist for an Editors' Choice Award," said Larry O'Connor, president of OWC.

"The award is a tribute to Ryan's talents and programming skills, as well as a pat on the back for OWC's efforts to provide ongoing support for the Macintosh community. We anticipate that as more Macintosh users become aware of the UtilityX, they will recognize this utility can extend the life of and their investment in their older Mac systems."

The Editors' Choice Awards were chosen based on a survey that was conducted on every Mac product on the market from Nov. 1, 2000 to Nov. 1, 2001 evaluating the products for their overall quality, as well as their utility, innovation and elegance.

OWC is a leading provider of products and services for the Macintosh marketplace and owns the exclusive licensing rights for Unsupported UtilityX. This software application allows Mac OS X to operate on select pre-G3 Macintosh computers. The utility can be downloaded free of charge by visiting :

SuSE Linux Distribution Halted By Injunction

The Register's Thomas C Greene reports that German Linux distributor SuSE has been served with a preliminary injunction by a German court barring it from distributing its product because an application, or application name, in the distro infringes a copyright.

<P>I'm not sure how far this injunction applies, but I'm pretty sure that the Bavarian court has no jurisdiction outside Europe, and SuSE Linux, which I have installed on my PowerBook, is still available on the SuSE US Website today, and I expect that distribution in North America won't be affected (the opinion of a total legal layman).

German lawyer Günther Freiherr von Gravenreuth has won a preliminary injunction at the Munich District Court against SuSE due to one of the (unnamed) open-source-software titles referenced on one of the SuSE-CDs.

SuSE ships with over 2,000 bundled applications and utilities.

PowerBook Maker Quanta To Supply New iMac

I have observed that there is a lot of laptop technology incorporated in the new iMac, so it's no surprise to hear that Quanta Computer Corp of Taiwan, which has built PowerBooks for Apple since the WallStreet second generation (PDQ) model, has been chosen to manufacture the new iMac computer. Accorting to the Taipei Times, Quanta will produce up to a million of the computers and 600,000 LCD screens from subsidiary Quanta Display.

Quanta makes Powerbooks for Apple, and reportedly was responsible For more information, visit: rabout a third of the engineering of the Titanium PowerBook, so it is reasonable to deduce that they probebly had a hand in engineering the new iMac as well.

Quanta is Taiwan's top notebook computer maker, and supplies laptops to Dell Computer Corp, Compaq Computer Corp as well as Apple.

Quanta ships 30,000-40,000 PowerBooks per month, and PowerBook orders to Quanta are expected to reach 300,000-400,000 units in 2002.

Apple Delivers Record-Breaking Webcast of Macworld Keynote

Apple has announced record-breaking Internet attendance via its QuickTime webcast of Steve Jobs' keynote at Macworld San Francisco. More than 81,000 simultaneous viewers watched the live Internet stream, nearly doubling the previous record set six months ago at Macworld New York. More than 11 terabytes of content were served during the two-hour webcast, which attracted more than 160,000 unique web visitors. During the peak of the webcast, more than 16.5 gigabits per second of video were streamed at broadband rates to viewers worldwide.

``This is an industry record for simultaneous video streaming, and it was only possible with QuickTime,'' said Philip Schiller, vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. ``With an average of over 2 viewers per stream, a total of over 300,000 people watched our keynote via QuickTime streaming.''

Driven by the popularity of high-quality QuickTime content such as movie trailers and nonstop news coverage from CNN, NPR and others -- one million copies of Apple's QuickTime 5 are being downloaded every three days. The rate of QuickTime 5 downloads has steadily increased since its launch in April, putting QuickTime 5 on track to exceed 100 million downloads in its first year of distribution.

The keynote was streamed over Apple's QuickTime TV (QTV) network, which delivers broadcast quality and reliability and includes Apple's QuickTime 5 player. QuickTime 5, Apple's industry-leading software for creating, playing and streaming high-quality audio and video over the Internet, is available as a free download to Macintosh and Windows users at:

Bud Tribble Rejoins Apple as Vice President of Software Technology

Apple has announced that Dr. Guy (Bud) Tribble has joined Apple as vice president of Software Technology reporting to Avie Tevanian. Tribble will be responsible for helping define the software engineering group's technical direction. Tribble began his career at Apple where, as manager of the original Macintosh Software team, he helped to design the Mac OS and user interface.

``Bud is one of the industry's top experts in software design and object-oriented programming,'' said Avie Tevanian, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering. ``We're thrilled he's returned to Apple to bring his unique expertise to our ongoing commitment to make Mac OS X, already the world's most advanced operating system, even better.''

Tribble joins Apple from Eazel Inc., where he was vice president of Engineering leading development of next generation user interface software and Internet services for Linux computers. Previously, Tribble was chief technology officer for the Sun-Netscape Alliance, responsible for guiding Internet and e-commerce software R&D. Tribble also helped found NeXT Computer, where he was vice president of Software Engineering and a key architect of the NextStep operating system.

Tribble earned a B.A. degree in Physics at the University of California, San Diego and a M.D. and Ph.D. in Biophysics and Physiology at the University of Washington, Seattle.
