LaCie Boosts Performance, Cross-platform Support with New U&I-enhanced 32x10x40x CD-RW Drive

LaCie has announced a 32x10x40x CD-RW drive that can burn a full 700MB CD in about 2-1/2 minutes. Showcased at LaCie's Macworld Booth No. 1443, the new external drive features a unique combination of three laser technologies that bring it very close to the theoretical speed limit for writing to CD-Rs.

The same drive can be used to rewrite CD-RW discs at 1.5 MB/s (10x) -- the industry's highest rewriting speed. The 40x read performance speeds retrieval of very large files and helps save time with any disc-intensive application.

For added convenience, the drive includes LaCie's "U&I" (FireWire and USB 2.0) dual support -- 400 Mbps FireWire and 480 Mbps USB 2.0 interfaces that allow users to connect, remove or swap the drive without having to restart the computer. USB 2.0 is fully compliant and backward compatible with the industry-standard USB 1.1.

In addition, users no longer have to worry about the reliability of their system or about bringing other computer activities to a standstill while recording a CD. The LaCie 32x CD-RW drive incorporates "BURN-Proof(TM) (Buffer Under RuN) technology that eliminates the possibility of buffer under-runs and ensures error-free recording at 32x speeds, even when lower-performance personal computers are used. Unlike passive drives, which are still common on the market, the LaCie 32x CD-RW drive automatically adapts its speed to system throughput.

A revolution in the use of CD-rewriters, the BURN-Proof technology also allows users to burn CDs in the background while working on other applications.

-- Burns a CD in less than 2-1/2 minutes -- Includes advanced BURN-Proof technology for error-free

recording
-- Lets the user work on the computer while burning CDs     -- New tri-laser combination speeds media access     -- 10x re-writing for fast back-up and archiving
-- Two convenient high-speed interfaces: FireWire and USB2

"With the LaCie 32x CD-RW drive, the market enters a new era with a generation of extremely fast and yet very reliable drives. The 32X recording speed and reliability of this drive, a combination that was unthinkable just a year ago, can only be achieved through innovations like the BURN-proof system or the Tri-laser combination," explained Frederic Albinet, LaCie's CD Product Manager. "But it's all transparent to the user, everything is automatic. Today's consumers are primarily concerned with saving time and convenience. The new LaCie 32x CD-RW is the ideal solution for professionals or anyone who cannot afford to waste precious time with a slow process, failed operations or a lengthy set-up."

The tri-laser technique, the most recent innovation in the CD-recording industry, helps the LaCie 32x CD-RW drive make the most of the interface throughput to maximize speed performance. The three-laser pick-up technologies -- Constant Angular Velocity (CAV), Zoned Constant Linear Velocity (Z-CLV) and standard Constant Linear Velocity (CLV) -- combine to improve media access when recording (Z-CLV and CLV) or reading (CAV).

LaCie's 32x10x40x CD-RW drive can be used with most CD-R and CD-RW media, including LaCie 700MB/80-minute CD-R discs. When a 16x, 24x or 32x CD-R media is used, the quality will be checked by the drive so that the media can be burned at the maximum speed when possible. If media is not high speed-capable, the drive will automatically downshift to a lower recording speed.

The LaCie U&I 32x10x40x CD-RW is available now at an estimated street price of $269. The price includes all cables, manuals, three blank CD-R discs, LaCie CD Recording Utilities software and a one-year warranty.

The LaCie CD Recording Utilities software package includes all the necessary software on a single CD-ROM: Adaptec Toast Lite (with BURN-Proof support) for Macintosh systems and Adaptec Easy CD Creator for Windows 98SE/NT/2000/ME. With the release of Linux 2.4, FireWire is supported in the Linux operating system. Other Linux users may download CD-burning software from the Internet.

Granite Digital Announces FireWire Support for Large Hard Disks; Granite FireVue 1394-IDE Bridges Work with Maxtor 160GB Hard Disk

Granite Digital has announced support for ATA-6 compatible hard disks with capacities greater than 137GB. With this announcement, Granite becomes the first manufacturer of 1394-IDE bridge products using the Oxford Semiconductor OXFW911 to support the new standard for large hard disks.

"We're excited to be the first to support the Maxtor 160GB drive using the industry standard OXFW911 silicon on our bridges," said Frank Gabrielli, President of Granite Digital. "Our customers -- especially those in video editing applications -- are demanding large capacity drives with the fastest Firewire performance. Our engineers are continuing to innovate around the rock-solid OXFW911, giving our customers the fastest, most compatible, and now with our SMART IDE case kits, the easiest to use 1394-IDE bridge products in the industry."

Granite is demonstrating its Granite FireVue line of 1394-IDE bridge controllers and case kits at Macworld Expo, Jan. 8-11. Demonstrations show operation with the new Maxtor 160GB hard disk.

Granite is also demonstrating its new FireVue SMART IDE case kits with integrated LCD display and keypad user interface. According to Gabrielli, "The integrated user interface is like a `technician in the box.' It lets the user check out and control the hard disk even before plugging it into the computer. It's really going to make life easier for end users and IT professionals to manage their drives."

Granite's FireVue products are fully compatible with Apple Macintosh and Windows platforms, and Granite ships software for field-upgrading its products and a 1394 `Firewire' browser on both platforms.

Mindavenue Develops Lightwave 3D Importer

MindAvenue has announced the launch of its LightWave 3D Importer for AXELedge 1.5 for Mac and PC. MindAvenue will offer demonstrations of the Importer at the NewTek booth, #3735, as well as the MindAvenue booth #927, during Macworld San Francisco, January 7-11, 2002.

Professional LightWave designers can import all content directly into AXEL, where they can take advantage of the only end-to-end Web authoring solution that requires no programming. AXELedge offers a strong set of interaction capabilities, as well as advanced animation, modeling, relations and constraints, previewing and publishing features -- housed within AXEL's drag and drop technology for simple and high-impact interactive 3D Web content creation. Users working on a Mac platform receive the benefits of an Aqua-compliant user interface -- a familiar interface that enables Mac artists to get up to speed faster.

"MindAvenue's new file format gives animators working in LightWave the flexibility to repurpose their content, providing an exceptional pipeline for delivering content to the Web in a highly interactive format," states Benoit Cloutier, VP of Research and Development. "By harnessing the power of both products, LightWave artists will bring new levels of interactivity to projects, delivering high-impact and engaging content easily and at a price that keeps their costs in line."

"We are delighted that MindAvenue has chosen LightWave 3D as its first commercial 3D file format," states Robert Hoffman, Director of Marketing 3D at NewTek. "LightWave artists working on a Mac can now deliver their content to the Web, adding interactivity without the need for programming.''

LightWave 3D users will particularly enjoy AXELedge's new movie texture support. Offering the ability to import video and apply as textures, AXELedge 1.5 is a natural progression for a community already accustomed to working in 3D for television and video.

Features and Benefits of AXELedge 1.5 for Mac: New Features:

Movie Textures: Supporting Apple(R) QuickTime(R), both editions enable users to import video and apply as textures to 3D content for more customized and vivid texture applications. Artists can push the boundaries of their imagination to the limit and maximize creativity.

Cartoon and Custom Wireframe Rendering Styles: Cartoon rendering enables designers to imbue 3D images with primary colors, creating the whimsical look of traditional 2D cartoons without sacrificing the benefits of a Z-axis. Custom wireframes provide a mesh-like wireframe of objects on which designers can build an entirely new look.

Enhanced User Interface: An intuitive, Aqua-compliant menu system and more familiar naming conventions allow artists to use more of their screens and accomplish more of their creative goals.

New Import Formats: Importing EPS gives designers the flexibility to work with more material created in other programs. Through the Movie Texture feature, professionals can import all QuickTime supported formats.

MindAvenue's AXELedge 1.5 will be available at Macworld 2002 January 7-11, 2002 for $950 US MSRP. Educational price is $245 US MSRP. AXEL products can be ordered directly through MindAvenue authorized distributors, resellers and on the MindAvenue Web site at http://www.mindavenue.com or by calling toll-free 1-866-MindAve. The preview of the LightWave 3D Importer will be available for download to registered AXELedge users in January 2002.

AXEL Player
One of the smallest players on the market, AXEL's plug-in player delivers multi-platform content on Mac and Windows for both Internet Explorer and Netscape. The player is automatically downloaded on the surfer's machine when viewing content for the first time, integrating seamlessly in a user's browser. The player's proprietary download format reinforces artists' copyright protection, inhibiting others from misappropriating or modifying content.
