We've made our own opinion known, now see what Applelinks
readers think:
"The bar is so high now, that even the fat lady
can do the limbo!"
"This may seem a bit nutty, (And yes, I've heard the
'It looks like a lamp' comments), but it's more that
that. I get the crazy feeling that the inspiration for
the new iMac's form factor came from the old Pixar 'lamp'
aminated shorts. If you gest rid of the lamp cover and
replace it with a flat screen monitor and widen and
lengthen the base of the lamp of course, it would look
like the new iMac!...
Though I like iPhoto, the speed bumped iBooks and the
new apps in either development or shipping, I was hoping
for something else to happen. Not a new PDA (That's been
played out too much. Folks need to "give it up"!). I was
hoping that Apple finally announce it's support for
Bluetooth. I think that Bluetooth support as well as
Wi-Fi (802.11) support folded into their Airport wireless
product would have opened new possibilities."
"The keynote at the Mall of America Apple Store was
quite an experience, and I will try to have a detailed
reaction for you later. There were, as you know, a number
of astonishing things today (iPhoto!), but I hope it will
be noted that in 27 locations around the country, people
got to see the keynote live. This is a quiet
breakthrough; 27 miniature macworlds all over the
country. One more thing that Apple is doing -- with great
style -- that no one else is even able to do...I went
initially with the intent of merely gauging peoples'
reactions to what was revealed in light of the
Apple-driven hype, but the RDF was incredible. I was
impressed and a little carried away by the actual event
itself and Steve's performance."
"Your piece earlier this afternoon about it was, I
think, right on. I sat next to a freelance graphic
designer, and when Steve was talking about the $30 book,
he looked at me and said: think of bringing that in as a
portfolio. Thirty bucks and photographers can have a
gorgeous portfolio to show people how cool they are. Made
on a Mac! And maybe not just pictures. What about getting
screen shots of web pages? ...
I think it will be awhile before iPhoto sinks in for
some people. A few teenagers who have clearly spent way
too much time at the rumor sites (not to mention way too
much time in musty basements playing, I don't know, Myst
and D&D, and other games that seem to require the
abandonment of major aspects of personal hygiene) were
outraged that there was no "one more thing." "Where's my
1 gigahertz G5?" one of them asked. I don't know, though;
I couldn't tell if he was serious or not. Mostly, people
were giddy, from start to finish -- except when Steve
asked for a round of applause for MS Office. 'Applause'
is not exactly the sound that filled the Apple
Store."
