Apple Introduces iPhoto Makes it Easy to Save, Organize & Share Digital Photos

Apple's new iPhoto introduced at MacWorld Expo is the “missing link” in digital photography that makes it incredibly easy to save, organize and share digital photos. With its simple and elegant user interface, iPhoto makes it easy to import, edit and print digital photos, as well as organize and manage an entire photo collection containing thousands of photos. Designed exclusively for Mac OS X, iPhoto is available as a free download at http://www.apple.com.

Features in brief:

• Import photos
Bring digital photos in directly from your digital camera.

• Organize
With photo albums, it's easy to organize your favorites any way you like.

• Crop your favorites
Crop, scale, rotate, all without complicated software.

• Make a book
Easily create lasting memories that you can get professionally printed.

• Online photo album
Host your albums on iTools with the simple click of a button.

• Order prints
Order prints from iPhoto, delivered to your door.

• Export to QuickTime
Export your photos into a QuickTime movie.

iPhoto takes digital photography to new levels with exciting ways to share digital photos. Users can now easily view their photos in full-screen, cross-dissolved slide shows accompanied by their favorite music; automatically create custom web pages of their photos; email their photos to friends and family; order professionally-processed Kodak prints and enlargements online; or easily create and order a custom-printed, linen-covered hard bound book of their photos online.

“Digital cameras are revolutionizing the way we take pictures. iPhoto revolutionizes the way we save, organize, share and enjoy them,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Just as iTunes and iPod are changing the way people listen to music, iPhoto will change the way people manage and share their digital photos.”

Importing, editing, saving, organizing, printing and sharing digital photos is a snap with iPhoto. Simply plug a digital camera into a Mac via USB or FireWire and iPhoto automatically imports, catalogs, stores and displays the photos on screen. Simply drag the mouse, and iPhoto magically grows or shrinks photos right before your eyes. Users can view individual shots in greater detail for precise cropping, or see hundreds of photos on the screen at once and quickly scroll through thousands to find the one they're looking for. iPhoto makes it easy to organize photos into digital albums—for birthdays, vacations, weddings or other occasions—for easy retrieval (for anyone familiar with iTunes, think “play-lists” for pictures), as well as add names, comments or keywords to favorite photos.

iPhoto brings a new level of simplicity and creativity to sharing digital photos with family and friends. With “one-click,” users can view a beautiful, full-screen photo slide show accompanied by their favorite music. Easily email photos, export photos to other applications or automatically create and publish a custom web page of photos on Apple’s iTools HomePage website.

iPhoto also makes printing photos quick and easy. With iPhoto’s intuitive print interface, printing photos on ink-jet printers is as simple as choosing the print size and number of photos printed per page, then pushing the “Print” button. That’s it. With iPhoto, users can also order professionally processed Kodak prints and enlargements online. Unlike traditional film processing, users can order just the prints they want, even up to a poster-sized 20” x 30” enlargement for just $19.99(US).

Perhaps iPhoto’s most stunning feature is its built-in page-layout program. Simply choose one of the six supplied book designs and iPhoto will automatically create a custom book of photos. Each page can be easily customized to have one, two, three or four photos. Then order a custom-printed, linen-covered hard bound book of photos online, for just $29.99(US) for the first 10 pages and $3(US) for each additional page.

iPhoto is available immediately as a free download from www.apple.com/iphoto. iPhoto requires Mac OS X version 10.1.2 and a Macintosh® with a built-in USB port. A Mac with a 400 MHz PowerPC G3 processor and 256MB RAM is recommended. Online ordering services are available in the US and Canada, and require the English-language version of iPhoto. Alias/Wavefront To Make 3D Graphics More Accessible Through ''Maya Personal Learning Edition''

Alias/Wavefront has announced that it is developing the Maya Personal Learning Edition which will provide users of Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X with unlimited, free access to Maya.

Maya Personal Learning Edition will give 3D graphics and animation students, current industry professionals, and those interested in breaking into the world of computer graphics (CG) an opportunity to explore the award-winning Maya Complete software, in a non-commercial capacity. Maya Personal Learning Edition will be available in February of 2002.

"For the first time in history, 3D computer graphics will become truly accessible to everyone," stated Alias/Wavefront President, Doug Walker. "CG professionals, students and aspiring 3D animators will be able to realize creative aspirations that might otherwise lie dormant. As the leaders in 3D graphics technology we are excited about engaging a whole new 3D community and equipping them with the tools, skills and support necessary to move ahead in the age of digital communication."

"Education is at the heart of ACM SIGGRAPH's mission and goals," states Judy Brown, president of ACM SIGGRAPH and a co-founder of the ACM SIGGRAPH Education Committee. "As an initiative that removes learning barriers and fosters the growth of the computer graphics community, Maya Personal Learning Edition contributes greatly to our goals."

Maya Personal Learning Edition grants anyone with the desire to learn more about Maya, or 3D computer graphics in general, a free seat of Maya for non-commercial use -- registration renewable yearly. Those using the Personal Learning Edition will have full access to the toolsets of Maya Complete including NURBS modeling, animation, inverse kinematics, Maya Artisan, Maya Paint Effects, particles, dynamics and Maya's advanced rendering capabilities. The Maya Personal Learning Edition restricts users to non-commercial applications through the display of a watermark on images as well as through the use of a special non-commercial file format. Moreover, Maya Personal Learning Edition cannot be used with industry-standard plug-ins.

Alias/Wavefront has also committed to supporting the Maya Personal Learning Edition community with a web-based user center. This center will provide access to learning materials, discussion forums, content exchanges where users can share work and galleries in which Maya Personal Learning Edition users may exhibit their projects.

Maya Personal Learning Edition will be available for free download beginning in February 2002 at http://www.aliaswavefront.com/freemaya. CD copies may also be ordered from this site at a cost of USD $5 plus shipping and handling.

Other World Computing Introduces "The Laptop Screen Protector"; Customized Keyboard Covers Prevent Damage to Delicate Laptop LCDs

Other World Computing (OWC), a leading provider of products and services for the Macintosh marketplace, Monday officially launched a line of Laptop Screen Protectors (LSPs) designed to prevent damage to laptop monitors while the laptops are closed.

Made from 100 percent natural, top-grain cowhide, LSPs are made to fit across a laptop's keyboard to prevent the keyboard and buttons on the base of the laptop from coming in contact with, and leaving skin oils or permanent marks and indentations on, the laptop screen or LCD (liquid crystal display).

"Apple PowerBooks and other laptops, including some Windows-based machines have had serious problems with the keyboards or buttons on the base of the laptop coming in contact with the laptop screens," said Larry O'Connor, president and chief executive officer of Other World Computing.

"The results are marks -- sometimes permanent -- on the LCD screen. We have been troubled with this problem for years, and recently developed a simple, yet effective solution. OWC's Laptop Screen Protectors fit nicely between the keyboard and the screen, providing a soft, protective barrier that eliminates unwanted contact when the laptop is closed."

The company has initially produced three sizes of the LSP, including 4- x 11-inches, which was custom made for the Macintosh iBook Dual USB; 5- x 11.5-inches, which fits over most standard laptop keyboards; and 8.5- x 12.75-inches, which was designed to fit over the entire keyboard and palm-rest area of the Apple PowerBook G4 Titanium.
"As laptops continue to get thinner and lighter, we are confident a product like the Laptop Screen Protector will prove to be a `must have' accessory for laptop owners," O'Connor said.

The LSPs from OWC do not require any after-purchase treatment and are designed not to shed or leave lint in-between the keys. Pricing for the LSPs begins at $14.95, and they can be purchased online at:

MYOB Demonstrates eBusiness Services For Mac OS X at Macworld Expo

MYOB US, Inc is hosting demonstrations and discussions at their Macworld Expo Booth #4040 to show small business owners the benefits of using its recently announced eBusiness Gateway services for electronic processing of automatic payments, direct deposits, credit card processing and vendor payments.

MYOB US enters the eBusiness service sector through its partnership with ACH Direct, making its services the first offered in conjunction with a small business accounting solution that combines electronic funds transfer (EFT) and credit card processing through a direct connection into the Federal Reserve ACH Network. It also represents a breakthrough for users as the first Mac EFT solution.

Automatic Billing and EFT services are key components of our strategies to address the complete business needs of our customers," said Cynthia Mackewicz, General Manager, MYOB US, Inc. "We're especially pleased to be the first to offer this service to our growing number of Mac users," she added.

"Mac OS X provides a rock solid foundation for businesses of all sizes," said Ron Okamoto, Apple's vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations. "Now MYOB is providing small businesses with the ability to conduct Electronic Fund Transfers with confidence using the powerful eBusiness Gateway."

Available through the MYOB Business Center on the MYOB web site at http://www.myob.com/us, is Automatic Billing, the first of the new services, which enables businesses to schedule payments from their customers on a recurring basis. The payments will be transferred automatically from the customer's bank account or charged to their credit card account and placed directly into the MYOB merchant's own bank account. Businesses using MYOB software will receive an email containing payment details that will easily import into current MYOB software, updating their accounting. This service is ideal for businesses that thrive on recurring billing, including health clubs, cleaning services, daycare centers, and others that charge their customers a fixed amount on a recurring basis.

The second and third stages of MYOB's eBusiness Gateway services are scheduled for first quarter 2002 and will include credit card processing, vendor payments and direct deposit. These services will be integrated with MYOB software and accessible directly from the products.
