Apple and the Maine Department of Education have executed a $37.2 million contract as of December 28, 2001 to run from January 1, 2002 to June 30, 2006 inclusive of four school years with two 1- year extensions possible. Maine Governor Angus King is known to be a big Mac supporter, and this initiative is his baby. King reportedly gave hands on lessons in the iBook's abilities attempt to sell his plan to legislators Maine also has an almost entirely Mac-based court system. Nine years ago, Maine's judicial department equipped each circuit judge with a PowerBook and modem. Judges in the supreme, superior, and district courts use their PowerBooks for legal research, word processing, and communications. The district and superior courts use the Macintosh for scheduling and email. Macs are also used by the courts for administrative tasks such as human resources, accounting, and training. Under the new Education Department contract, Apple will supply devices and software including Apple iBook portable wireless computers with carrying cases plus: AppleWorks, Internet browsers, iMovie, FirstClass, ETC for FirstClass, Acrobat Reader, iTunes, QuickTime, iTools, Palm Desktop, FAXstf, Microsoft Outlook Express, and anti-virus protection software. The hardware will be backed by a 4 year AppleCare Protection Plan plus Help Desk support (800 number with an exclusive extension dedicated to the MLTI schools) provided for all users. Students will not be without a device for more than one school day. All 7th grade students and teachers will receive the devices for the start of school year 2002-2003, with all 7th and 8th grade students and teachers having the devices in the second school year. ˇApple will establish an in-state project office and is expected to establish an Executive Briefing Center in Maine to showcase our results. Apple will collaborate with the Maine-based Center for Educational Services to deliver technical training. Under the direction of the Department of Education, Apple and the Center will offer curriculum integration training consistent with the goals of Maine Learning Results and based on the needs assessments completed by middle level educators.
