The first two iterations of Apple's formidable G3 Series PowerBooks are about to get a new lease on life when PowerLogix releases its new BlueChip G4 and BlueChip LS G4 processor upgrades, possibly before Christmas. Other World Computing is currently taking orders for the Lombard cards at special introductory prices (see below) for shipping later this month. The WallStreet version is expected to be available in January. Grafting in a PowerPC 7410 G4 chip is guaranteed to give your PowerBook G3 a substantial power boost at a fraction of the cost of a new TiBook. BlueChip supports the maximum memory specified by Apple (NB: that is only 192 MB for the WallStreet), and installation should be no problem for the reasonably adept. The stock processor card pops out and the BlueChip G4 goes in its place. As PowerLogix puts it: "If muscle is more important to you than metal, the BlueChip G4 is the card for you." You must have a working CPU module in your machine prior to installation of the BlueChip. A ROM transfer from your existing processor is required before the BlueChip can operate. And the major caveat is that the BlueChip G4 and BlueChip LS G4 are currently only compatible with OS 10.x. That could be a serious deficiency, and one hopes that OS 9.x support will be added soon. Another issue that will be interesting to watch is how the sultry PPC 7410 fares inside the WallStreet and Lombard, which are known to get plenty hot even with their stock G3 processors. You should probably be prepared to live with a lot of cooling fan activity. BlueChip G4 and BlueChip LS G4 Features
