Macworld Best of Show Awards

Friday, July 20, 2001

By Senior Editor John H. Farr

You may find some of this quite interesting: Mac Publishing LLC (Macworld Magazine, MacCentral, etc.) today released its "Macworld Best of Show Awards," and the company didn't even have a booth at the Expo this year...

We actually find the above more surprising than some of the choices (more on them in just a moment). According to ThinkSecret:

"Despite their immense presence at recent shows, Mac Publishing LLC and its print (Macworld) and web (MacCentral) outlets made virtually no appearance on the show floor this year, instead residing in a small conference room."

Hmm. And now on to the awards. The complete results are here at Business Wire, but here's what we noticed: OS X 10.1 (not yet available) is a winner, along with the mid-range QuickSilver Power Macintosh (866MHz). The former can't be had until September and isn't even finished, but still wins. The latter can be ordered now and is an excellent bargain, however. The other items are all good products and fairly predictable: Asante FriendlyNet Wireless Ready Cable/DSL Router, Canon D2400UF scanner, DiamondSoft Font Reserve Server for OS X, IBM ViaVoice for OS X, Micromat Drive 10, SmartDisk FireLite 5 GB FireWire Hard Drive, and these three, which require a comment or two.

Xerox Phaser 860 -- no, it's not a Star Fleet weapon, it's a printer. But you knew that already, yes?

Toon Boom -- an animation program, apparently, designed for "animaters [sic] in the Mac community. Well guys, we don't know how many "animaters" there are in these parts. Is that anything like an alligater? Or a hot potater??

Finally, Microsoft Office 2001 for OS X -- Oh please. We saw the demo. This thing has over 800 DIALOG WINDOWS... we wouldn't buy a copy of this unless it came with an actual Bill Gates body part attached. We don't care which. It's just that if it did, we'd urge everyone to rush out and buy the software.
