More Technical Details on QuickSilver
Macs

We're giving these to you based on an eWEEK
article, not directly from Apple, so bear that in mind
in case there's a mistake. What Apple executives explained
to Daniel Drew Turner and others at eWEEK is still quite
interesting, assuming the writers got it straight.
Here's what we could glean from the above source:
1. The new PowerMacs do have revised logic
boards: "The new logic board, which runs at 133MHz,
supportsSDRAM but not the newer, faster (and more
expensive) DDR standard." The boards are still based on
the previous architecture, however.
2. The dual 800MHz processor model does allow for more
throughput, despite the limitations of the logic board,
because the processors' L3 caches (2MB each) increase
efficiciency of data flow.
3. The low-end 733MHz model does not have an L3 cache.
And here's where it gets somewhat complicated: "...the
new systems also mark a change in Apple's
customize-to-order policy: Under the new plan, patrons of
Apple's online store can mix and match individual
processor configurations." Got that?
4. PCI slot bus throughput rate is almost
double that of previous models! Whatever you plug
in will run better, in other words.
5. The default video accelerator cards are based on
"nVidia Corp.'s GeForce 2 MX chip, a lower-performance
version of the GeForce 2." But you can get a GeForce
3-based card for an extra $350. And you can still get a
PCI-based Radeon as well.
Comments: That should hold you for a while. The
latest PowerMacs still have room for improvement, but who or
what doesn't? The point is that they are significantly
upgraded, look better, sound better, and are even cheaper in
some cases. We think the dual processor model especially
would do us nicely, thank you very much!
