ATI announces RADEON VE MAC EDITION

ATI Technologies Inc. has announced availability of the RADEON VE MAC EDITION graphics card for Apple users.

Based on ATI's highly integrated, cost-effective and award-winning RADEON VE chip, RADEON VE MAC EDITION is specifically designed to provide dual-display capability, enabling any combination of VGA (video graphics array), DVI (digital visual interface) and TV.

Featuring 32MB (megabytes) of DDR (double data rate) memory and ATI's patented HYPER Z(TM) technology, RADEON VE MAC EDITION delivers excellent 2D and 3D performance. Additional ATI features such as VIDEO IMMERSION(TM) and support of industry standards like OpenGL and QuickTime, ensure that the RADEON VE MAC EDITION delivers excellent value for its price range, and meets the needs of the mainstream PCI Mac market.

"With this announcement, ATI has delivered the award-winning RADEON VE technology to the Apple space, bringing single-card dual-display support to the mainstream Mac market and broadening the spectrum of ATI offerings optimized for Macs," said Jewelle Schiedel-Webb, Director, Desktop Marketing, ATI Technologies Inc. "The powerful 3D performance and flexible dual-display support that characterizes RADEON VE MAC EDITION make this an excellent graphics hardware choice for Mac users who are looking for proven and reliable technology."

RADEON VE MAC EDITION's support for dual independent displays allows users to set their system up with two CRT's (cathode ray tubes, or analog monitors) or a CRT and DFP (digital flat panel monitor) or a DFP and a TV. This multi-monitor capability increases productivity by doubling screen space, making multitasking easier. Users can read email on one screen while working on a spreadsheet on the other or reference the Internet on one screen while writing an essay on the other. Multi-monitor capability can take advantage of extra, unused monitors that can be found in many homes, essentially doubling screen space without having to purchase a new, larger monitor or an additional video card.

RADEON VE MAC EDITION is ideal for mainstream Mac users, both at work and at home. For the corporate market, RADEON VE MAC EDITION features solid 2D capabilities. For the home, RADEON VE MAC EDITION delivers solid 3D performance, integrated TV out and ATI's VIDEO IMMERSION technology for industry-leading video playback. RADEON VE MAC EDITION supports both Mac OS 9.x and OS X.

RADEON VE MAC EDITION, with connectors for traditional CRT monitors, flat panel displays and TV out, features 32 MB of DDR memory and multi-monitor support. Boards will ship in September 2001 and will have a MSRP of (US) $129.

SmartDisk Introduces New 8X-Speed FireWire Portable CD-R/W and FireWire Portable Thin Drive Designed to Match Titanium PowerBook G4

SmartDisk Corporation has announced new versions of its SmartDisk VST FireWire Portable Thin Drive and SmartDisk VST FireWire Portable CD-R/W Drive, both designed with sleek, silver-colored casings to complement Apple's Titanium PowerBook G4. SmartDisk is demonstrating the new thin drives and CD-R/W drive in booth 841, Javits Center at Macworld Expo, July 18-20 in New York.

With the SmartDisk VST FireWire Portable CD-R/W Drive, users can record and store music, archive and access photos, record digital videos and safely back-up large amounts of data while working on airplanes, in cars or in other restricted work spaces. The drive measures just 5.5 in x 7.0 in x 1.0 in and features a front-loading/ejection CD tray, ideal for small work spaces. Because the drive is FireWire-powered, it doesn't require an AC adapter or battery pack. The unit derives its power from a computer's FireWire bus via a standard two-foot FireWire cable. In addition, the drive features "plug & play" support, which allows immediate use upon plug-in without the need to shut down or reconfigure the computer.

Included with the SmartDisk VST FireWire CD-R/W Drive is CD burning software for both Macintosh and Windows. The drive works with Macintosh computers with FireWire support and Mac OS 8.6 to Mac OS 9.x, and with FireWire-enabled PCs running Windows 98 SE or higher. The SmartDisk VST FireWire CD-R/W Drive also supports Apple's iTunes for importing music CDs to MP3 files, creating play lists, burning music CDs, moving music to portable MP3 players and more.

Perfect for a variety of digital video, audio, data backup and multimedia applications used by consumers and professionals, the SmartDisk VST FireWire Portable Thin Drives rapidly transfer and store large volumes of music, movies, photos and data to and from desktops and laptops. Their small casing - just 3.0 in x 5.5 in x 0.68 in - and weight of just six ounces make them easy to carry and use with mobile applications.

To enhance user productivity and save time, the new SmartDisk VST FireWire Portable Thin Drives feature improved data transfer rates of up to 17 Megabytes per second - up to twice as fast as competing products. They incorporate next-generation FireWire technology and are compatible with any FireWire-equipped computer. Because the drives are FireWire cable bus-powered, no external power source is necessary even when they're used with a notebook computer such as the PowerBook G4. They also feature hot-plug/unplug support, which means users don't have to shut down or restart the computer when they install the drives.

Every drive ships with VST Format 2.3 with HotPlug Events(TM), software that allows a user to program the drives to execute any number of tasks automatically upon plug-in, such as backing up data or launching a favorite MP3 play list.

"With the SmartDisk VST FireWire Portable CD-R/W and FireWire Portable Thin Drives, consumers and professionals alike can simplify the way they capture, store, transport and edit music, movies, presentations and other applications they use on a daily basis," said Rod H. King, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing for SmartDisk. "The SmartDisk VST FireWire CD-R/W Drive and our line of new FireWire Portable Thin Drives bring these benefits to laptop users, giving them portable solutions that are easy to carry, easy to use and powered by the laptop itself."

"The PowerBook G4 offers elegance, ultra-portability, speed, reliability and power," said Ron Okamoto, Apple's vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations. "Its unparalleled portable video editing and digital music management capabilities are well complemented by true plug & play storage solutions like the SmartDisk VST FireWire Portable Thin Drive and SmartDisk VST FireWire CD-R/W Drive."

The SmartDisk VST FireWire CD-R/W is priced at $329.95 MSRP. The SmartDisk VST FireWire Portable Thin Drive is available in three capacities to accommodate a range of digital lifestyle needs. For less demanding digital applications, the 10 GB model is well suited, while the 20 GB and 30 GB models provide larger capacities for a variety of digital video, Internet content, audio and multimedia applications. Prices are $392.95 for the 10 GB drive, $469.95 for the 20 GB drive and $669.95 for the 30 GB drive.

The new products will be available in July through retailers and distributors, as well as through the company's Web site at:

Western Digital Unveils Industry's Highest Capacity 7,200 RPM FireWire Hard Drive at Macworld

At the Macworld Conference & Expo, Western Digital Corp. has introduced the storage industry's highest performance 80 GB FireWire external hard drive.

The new hard drive provides a quick and easy way to add storage in a space-efficient, stackable enclosure compatible with Macintosh and PC computers. Designed with Western Digital's 7,200 RPM WD Caviar drive and a new UDMA 66 1394 bridge card, this product is three times faster than previous WD models in terms of transfer rate.

The 80 GB FireWire external drive is ideal for storing the mass data generated by digital video editing, digital camcorders, digital cameras, scanners and digital music collections and is a quick solution for backing up an internal hard drive in one step, on one drive. Hot swap capabilities allow users to share files between computers and provide easy connection of the new peripherals without turning the computer off.

"With the increasing popularity of data-rich applications, including the management of large data files and digital music, video and photography, WD's FireWire external hard drives provide the ideal, simple, storage solution," said Richard E. Rutledge, vice president of marketing for Western Digital. "Users can add mass amounts of high-performance storage by simply adding these plug and play external hard drives. If even more storage is desired, the drives stack together and can be daisy-chained."

WD's FireWire external hard drives, available in capacities of 30, 60 and 80 GB, provide additional storage that can be easily detached from the computer and locked up for security, or shared from computer to computer. The hard drives are compatible with any computer with a built-in FireWire port, using either Windows 98 SE or Mac OS 8.6 or higher operating systems. For computers without FireWire ports, Western Digital offers a PCI adapter for desktops and a CardBus PC Card for notebooks, which will add the FireWire interface to these legacy systems. All WD FireWire products carry a one-year warranty.

Widespread availability of WD's 80 GB FireWire external hard drives is expected in late August through Western Digital's retail partners, Internet resellers including catalog partners, selected distributors, and the Company's online store. Manufacturer's suggested retail price for WD's 80 GB FireWire Drive is $379.
