LaCie Doubles Performance of PocketDrives to 35MB/s, Announces World Premiere of New 48GB PocketDrive

LaCie reinforced its lead in the mobile storage market today with two major announcements on its highly successful PocketDrive line. By combining the new FireWire-to-IDE bridge developed by LaCie with high-performance ATA 66 disks, the 10GB, 20GB and 30GB PocketDrives now provide transfer rates of up to 35MB/s -- twice as fast as traditional FireWire disks. The new 48GB PocketDrive, which is making its debut at LaCie's Macworld Booth No. 1913 this week, will also achieve transfer rates of up to 35MB/s.

Measuring only 3.5" x 5.75" x 1" and weighing less than a pound, LaCie's PocketDrives provide Gigabytes of capacity in an exceptionally small form factor. The new 48GB PocketDrive can store more than 20 hours of MPEG-2 video, more than 70 hours of CD-quality audio or a stack of text documents more than half-a-mile high.

Offering a combination of high capacities, mobility and convenience, the LaCie PocketDrives have quickly become very popular among content developers, illustrators, audio/video professionals and people on-the-go. With both Universal Serial Bus (USB) and FireWire® (IEEE 1394) support, or "U&I" (LaCie's acronym and trademark for the dual-support capability), the versatile drives provide users with an easy means of expanding the storage capacity of USB-equipped computers such as Apple® iMacs, and iBooks; and FireWire systems such as the Macintosh® G4 workstations and G4 Cubes, PowerBooks and the iMacDV systems.

The FireWire and USB buses make the LaCie PocketDrives hot-pluggable -- they mount automatically as soon as they are connected and can be removed or swapped without having to shutdown or reboot the system.

In addition, because the PocketDrive is acompatible with all FireWire or USB-equipped machines, users can quickly share the contents of the entire drive with others -- regardless of their operating system. The capacity and performance of LaCie's pocket-sized hard drives also make them ideal for full backups of an internal drive, including a bootable operating system.

"Our high-capacity PocketDrives are Ideal for storing, exchanging and editing large files such as digital video; and our new FireWire-to-IDE bridge eliminates quality and video frame loss," explained Guillaume Mazieres, LaCie Vice President of Marketing & Sales. "Because they're faster than most internal drives, they can speed-up drive-intensive applications such as graphics, music-editing, audio/video, office application or desktop publishing. In addition," he noted, "the LaCie PocketDrives feature the brand new Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) motor technology. This reduces the drives' noise level by 20%, making them some of the quietest external drives on the market."

Available now through LaCie authorized resellers and mail order partners, the LaCie PocketDrives have SRPs (after the $30 mail-in rebates) of $249 for the 10GB hard drive, $349 for the 20GB drive, $449 for the 30GB drive and $849 for the 48GB drive. In addition to the USB and FireWire cables, the drives include a small international power supply adapter for worldwide use, and LaCie's Silverlining Pro drive management software. Silverlining Pro is the most comprehensive drive management software on the market and the only driver able to manage USB, IDE, SCSI and FireWire peripherals at the same time.

One-Handed Half Keyboard x2 Debuts at Macworld Expo in New York

Known for its sleek ultra-compact Half Keyboard for Palm handhelds, today Matias Corporation debuted its Half Keyboard x2 for Macintosh, at Macworld Expo in New York (Booth #1347). This new x2 model brings the company's futuristic technology to the desktop.

The Matias Half Keyboard x2 is a full-function standard desktop keyboard, with two embedded Half Keyboards (one for each hand) that allow fast one-handed touch typing, using peoples' existing skills.

Now, users can touch-type with one hand or two, whichever best suits their current task. Applications range from text editing to desktop publishing and CAD, to high performance gaming.

"By combining three keyboards into one, the x2 offers users the best of both worlds. You still have your standard keyboard, but you also have two embedded Half Keyboards, which are ideal for applications that require you to keep your hand on the mouse at all times. Since each can be operated with just one hand, you don't need to move a hand back and forth to switch between them. It's much more flexible and efficient for data entry than a regular desktop keyboard," said Vesna Vojnic, Marketing Manager for Matias.

Advantages include:

* Easier Text Editing - Now you can scroll, select text, type corrections,
make deletions, etc., without moving your hand back and forth between
keyboard and mouse.
* Users of Desktop Publishing, CAD, Photoshop and other graphics software
can change tools and issue commands on the Half Keyboard, without taking
their hand off the mouse or stylus.
* High Performance Gaming - By offering eyes-free control of the keyboard
with just one hand, gamers now have easier access to more weapons and
commands, for better game play.
* Disabled Persons - One-handed typing is ideal for many hand-related
disabilities.

The Half Keyboard x2 retails for only US$99 and can be purchased from the company's website, on a pre-order basis. It is slated to ship in October. A free software demo is available for download from:

For users needing the ultimate in desktop space-saving minimalism, the original Half Keyboard for Macintosh is available now, for only US$99.

Asante Showcases Gigabit Ethernet Products At Macworld

Asante Technologies, Inc continues to make Gigabit Ethernet even more affordable. In booth no. 1425 at Macworld New York (July 18-20), Asante will be showing the broadest family of Gigabit Ethernet products for Macintosh and PC computers. "Asante's new 1000BaseT GBIC is the most affordable in its class," commented Rusty Callihan, Asante's vice president of Sales. "And it supports all industry-standard Gigabit Ethernet switches with GBIC slots."

Asante will also highlight its award-winning line of cable/DSL routers. The company's new wireless-ready router, the FriendlyNET FR3002AL, is a 2-port 10/100 switch with integrated print server and optional wireless connection. "The FR3002AL is the only router to offer users a choice -- either wired or wireless," commented William Hang, product manager at Asante. "This gives users flexibility at an affordable price." When users want wireless support, they simply plug an Asante AeroLAN into the router and begin talking with other 802.11b compatible devices -- including Apple's AirPort.

The recently released FriendlyNET FR3004C, which contains a redundant modem port, enables customers to upgrade from a v.90 56K analog modem and still keep it as a back-up modem. For those who also need a network print server, the FR3004LC is available for just $10 more.

Asante continues its leadership in offering affordable, powerful Gigabit Ethernet switches. The FriendlyNET GX4-800 switch contains 8 Gigabit Ethernet ports -- 7 ports of 10/100/1000BaseT and one 1000BaseX GBIC module interface -- which provide the flexibility to easily connect workgroups to a fiber- or copper-based Gigabit backbone. Compared with other 8-port Gigabit switches, the new GX4-800GBIC is half the price -- just $250 per port. In addition, Asante will feature the GX4-224 (24 ports of 10/100 with 2 ports of 100/1000) and the GX4-400 (4 ports of 100/1000) switches.

Asante will also showcase new high-density Gigabit switches. "The IntraCore 65120 switches have the highest Gigabit port count in the rack-mounted 1U market," said Wilson Wong, Asante's CEO and president. "And the cost per port will be the lowest, making them the most affordable switches in their class."

The IntraCore 65120 switches offer great flexibility. Depending on the existing network structure, each GBIC Gigabit Ethernet module interface can be configured with a 1000BaseT, 1000BaseSX, or 1000BaseLX GBIC interface. This non-proprietary architecture allows customers to mix-and-match many different network configurations, reducing acquisition costs. "Customers only have to purchase what they need when they need it," added Wong.

Show Specials

Macworld show specials enable attendees to get the best deals on the hottest networking products, including factory-refurbished routers, hubs, and adapters. "Come to the Asante booth at Macworld for the best deals in networking," said Callihan.

"Internet Security for Your Macintosh" Ships At MacWorld/NY

Open Door Networks Inc. today announced availability of the first book dedicated to Macintosh Internet security, "Internet Security for Your Macintosh: A Guide for the Rest of Us." Written by Alan Oppenheimer, Open Door's founder and president, and Charles Whitaker, Open Door's lead technical writer, the book leverages Open Door's five years as a Macintosh Internet security company to provide a comprehensive but easy to understand guide for any Mac user who's connected to the Internet. Published by Peachpit Press, the book is available at the Peachpit booth (No. 855) at the MacWorld trade show, as well as at book retailers nationwide.

"We've learned a lot about what Mac users do and don't need to worry about as far as security on the Net," said Oppenheimer. "We've also learned a lot about how they want that security to be as simple and easy to understand as the Macintosh itself. And we've learned that the increasing popularity of broadband connections, and the availability of Mac OS X are creating a whole new set of challenges. With 'Internet Security for Your Macintosh' we hope to make what we've learned available to as wide an audience as possible."

The book includes four main sections: "General Security Principles," "Securing Internet Services," "Enhancing Overall Security" and "Advanced Topics." The "Advanced Topics" section includes a chapter on securing Mac OS X, which, being based on the Unix operating system, presents a number of security issues that Mac users have not previously had to address. Chapters are also included on Internet security at work and on AirPort (wireless) networks. The book's Web site, http://www.peachpit.com/macsecurity/ includes a full table of contents, an excerpt, updates, and supplementary materials. The retail price for the book is $19.99.

Open Door Networks, Inc. is a leading provider of Internet security solutions for the Macintosh. Open Door was founded in January, 1995 by Alan Oppenheimer, co-creator of the AppleTalk network system and co-author of "Inside AppleTalk." Open Door's mission is to provide Macintosh users with Internet solutions that are as easy-to-use and as powerful as the Macintosh itself. Open Door Networks is based in Ashland, Oregon.

Seek Systems Announces FasFile Xcelerator Support for Macintosh Platform

Seek Systems, Inc., provider of high-performance data storage solutions, announces FasFile Xcelerator now enhances the performance of SCSI-attached storage for Macintosh platforms.

Organizations using data-intensive design, document imaging, multimedia, video editing, and pre-press applications benefit from enhanced disk storage and performance improvements of up to 400 percent. FasFile Xcelerator now delivers a more flexible and lower cost alternative to Solid State Disk for Macintosh platform users.

"FasFile Xcelerator solves a critical problem for data-intensive multimedia companies: poor application performance due to slow data access. Seek Systems now offers improvements to its successful storage appliance to increase application performance on Mac operating systems, including the Mac OS X," says G. Wayne Smith, CEO of Seek Systems.

Xcelerator is an alternative to Solid State Disk that requires no management or changes to an existing storage environment, yet provides exceptional flexibility. Attaching to a host or server's SCSI bus to support any standard SCSI RAID or JBOD array, Xcelerator accelerates performance by continually monitoring content and dynamically adapting to the changing profile of applications. Xcelerator relieves Input/Output (I/O) bottlenecks and accelerates data access during peak times. The appliance can support up to six hosts at a fraction of the price of Solid State Disk. In addition, FasFile Xcelerator allows users to utilize multiple operating systems such as Windows NT/2000, UNIX, and SGI within the same storage array.

Xcelerator hails from Seek System's FasFile family of application performance solutions based on Adaptive Cache architecture. Adaptive Caching technology analyzes the priority of accessed data patterns to determine which data is accessed most recently and most frequently. Xcelerator requires no changes to existing storage architecture, operating systems, databases, or application software, and is compatible with Oracle, Sybase, Informix, and SQL Server databases.
