Yes, It's Really Happening! (Photos) [UPDATED] By Senior Editor John H. Farr After all this time the doors are finally about to open. Actually, they've been open for those with the right ID cards for some time already, even though the management of Javits Center hasn't seen fit to turn on the air-conditioning for the comfort of the set-up crews. But take a look at our latest photos... ![]() A little bit more to the left, maybe? :-) As we indicated yesterday, this sign is much better than the vapid Macworld Expo billboard. This one is both colorful and memorable, with just that slightly inscrutable edge that causes it to stick in your mind. And now turn on the AC! It'll take a long time for the interior of such a huge space to cool down. The last time we were there, it never did! ![]() We're not sure where publisher and webmaster Joe Ryan took this picture, but it just goes to show that you can't be in New York City this week and not know there's an Expo going on. What occurs to us, of course, is something like: wouldn't it be nice if we could see signs like this as often as billboards for cheap motels? Wouldn't you like to be driving down the Interstate and see an iBook sign instead of one that told you which exit to take for the nearest BurgerDoodle? UPDATE: 4:14 MDT -- We have been informed by experienced trade show verterans that exhibition halls are never cooled or heated while the freight loading doors are open. We still question whether or not the constantly opening doors of a show that's in session don't cause just as much expensively-treated air to leak out, but we'll leave that one to the experts. All we know is that the last time we went to Macworld Expo New York, we nearly died from heat exhaustion both outside and inside the hall. Your editor, who has lived in some of the hottest, most hellish climates on the face of the earth, has never been hotter (or wetter) than he was that summer of '99 in NYC... In any event, we will publish a full report on what it's like to set up in Javits later today!
