Mini-Review Update - Multiple Email Accounts In Nisus Email 1.5.1

Monday, June 25, 2001

By Applelinks Contributing Editor Charles W. Moore

I have a bunch of e-mail accounts -- one for each of several Web sites I write for; one from my ISP; several personal ones from other services; as well as an e-mail discussion forum that I moderate. At one time, I used to manage all of my e-mail accounts respectively with copies Eudora Light hacked with ResEdit to run simultaneously. For more on how to do that, check out this column:
http://www.applelinks.com/mooresviews/email.shtml

I still like Eudora Light a lot, but having a separate application running for each e-mail account is cumbersome and inefficient, so I have been gradually making the transition to consolidating most of my e-mail account management into a smaller number of e-mail clients that support multiple accounts, although I still find convenient to use Eudora Light (nothing works slicker or quicker) for a couple of high traffic addresses, including the forum list.

Recently, I moved a couple more of my erstwhile Eudora Light accounts into Nisus Email 1.5.1. Both of these addresses were receiving a lot of spam traffic, and Nisus Email allows you the option of previewing what's on the server before commencing the download process; you can delete the stuff you obviously don't want without downloading it -- not a trivial advantage when you're on a slow, rural dial up connection like mine. There is no small degree of satisfaction in deleting the spam before it gets on your hard drive.

I've also found that Nisus Email handles multiple accounts reasonably gracefully, but it still has a few shortcomings in that regard that I would like to see addressed in the next upgrade.

One is that it would be a lot more convenient if you could change the sending account after a message is in the queued emails folder. You can do this in a pop-up menu in the composition window before the composed message is queued up, but not after. The sending address otherwise defaults to whichever "personality" is selected at the time the message is queued.

Secondly, I wish there was a way to transfer messages from one e-mail archive folder to another, which, as far as I can discern, there is not currently.

[Addendum:

Reader Darryl Burgwin writes:

Charles,

Select an email (or emails) in any mail folder window, then Control-Click. This will give you a list of all folders to which you can send your selected email (i.e. "Move To: Digest Folder"). This function has been in NE since vers. 1.0.

<P>Hi Darryl;

Cool! It works :-)

I combed the manual for about 15 minutes last night, including word searches, but didn't find that information (although it may be in there somewhere).

Thanks!

C.]

Also, not specifically related to multiple accounts, I wish the archive TOC lists showed more information, such as the size of the message file, and whether or not it has been replied to.

Back in the plus column, Nisus Email's filter system is easy and intuitive to set up, and it works well. Aside from the to complaints above, I am quite pleased with nice this e-mail as a substitute for my old stalwart hacked Eudora Lights, and its quick send feature is unparalleled in any other Mac e-mail client.

This program's ability to work seamlessly in cooperation with virtually any word processor or text editor, thereby allowing users to access to what ever editing and proofing tools the composer application offers, is also very useful.

Nisus Email is now up to version 1.5.1, and you can read about all its features, here:
http://www.nisus.com/products/nisusemail

You can also download a 14 day fully working demo from that URL. Nisus Email sells for $29.95. If you have paid for a previous version of Nisus Email, the upgrade to version 1.5.1 is free.
