"Audrey" is and was a television-styled Internet device
marketetd by 3Com recently. The odd little machine, sold
originally for $499, uses "an old-fashioned turn knob" to
access a limited number of Web sites whose owners paid 3Com
to be included. Now the company is buying back any
Audrey's purchased from its Web site!
That's the word from InternetNews.com,
whose report also says that only customers who purchased the
devices from its own Web site are included (so far) in the
buyback offer. Owners who bought their Audreys from
retailers such as Best Buy and CompUSA are so far left out,
apparently. We have rarely seen such a buyout, no matter
what kind of product is involved, and the few we can recall
have usually had to do with product safety. Perhaps Audrey
ownership is harmful to their owners' self-esteem. In any
case, it certainly seems to be the case that your
possession of the device is harmful to 3Com's corporate
esteem, and if you own one, we hope you bought it
online.
