We'd love to only bring you good news, but that isn't
always possible. Accordingly, we regret to say that January
Macintosh desktop sales declined by 62 percent over
the same month last year.
We found the numbers in an article at the Register
(UK). They're the latest figures from PC Data Corporation,
which also tells us that PowerBook sales were down 36
percent. For the PC market as a whole, desktop sales were
down 26 percent and laptop sales down 9 percent. There is
really no way to put a favorable spin on these statistics,
but we do note that Apple is widely expected to introduce
new hardware later today at the Tokyo Expo. As the Register
says, "it better pray that punters like them."
With the latest desktop G4s and the titanium PowerBook
now shipping in ever-increasing volume, things may turn
around shortly anyway. And it's worth remembering that Apple
has tons of cash and millions of devoted customers. With
great new hardware and RAM prices scraping the bottom of the
barrel, there's probably never been a better time to buy a
new system.
