Marathon, the highly-regarded first-person shooter trilogy by Bungie Software refuses to let time pass it by. Teams of artists, mapmakers, sound gurus, and others have joined to create scenarios and total conversions for the Marathon engine, hacking together their own tools for modifying the original games. And now in the works is Rubicon, the largest Marathon scenario project ever created. Four years in the making, Rubicon will feature:
All this will come wrapped in a nonlinear plotline that can be traversed in any number of ways, featuring different endings based upon a player's choices over the course of the game. Randy Reddig, the texture artist and a mapmaker for Bungie's original Marathon Infinity, called Rubicon's visuals "...the nicest I've ever seen come out of Marathon." With complex plots and advanced movement features, the games of the Marathon triology revolutionized the first-person shooter genre. And, as they were Mac-only at the time, made many a PC gamer envious. Those happy days are gone, but it looks like the days of Marathon gaming have returned. Marathon Rubicon is currently in late beta testing and will be publicly available for free download when testing is complete.
