Is Apple The Oscar Wilde Of The Computer World?

Thursday, August 3, 2000

Business Week's Charles Haddad thinks the Cube Is cool. In his latest BYTE OF THE APPLE column, Haddad notes that Steve Jobs isn't his favorite person, being a bit too "controlling and devious" for Haddad's taste. "But... one understands Apple and the role it should play the way Jobs does, Haddad concedes. "He sees Apple as the stylish alternative, the Oscar Wilde of the computer world."

Haddad notes that the Cube breaks new ground in several areas, being the first computer with completely digital circuitry, incorporating the new Apple Display Connector, which carries power as well as digital video signals, and dispensing with a cooling fan (actually pioneered last year on the iMac.)

Then there's the other good stuff like the 450 MHz G4 processor, DVD drive, and RAM upgrade capacity up to 1.5 gigabytes.

Professionalmac.com's Publisher Brian D. Lipscomb has posted a guide to determining "Which Mac is the Right Mac?" for business use.

"Not only are there great choices available for your company," hes says, "but there are sure to be great deals available on closeout models as the new models begin to become widely available."

"There has never been a better time to buy a new Mac," says Lipscomb. All of the new models offer an increase in features for the same price, especially the dual processor G4 models. Apple has done a good job of covering all the bases needed for your company."

The overview Lipscomb provides of the Mac choices from a business perspective is concise and informative. Regarding the Cube, he observes:

"What can I say? This model is clearly controversial, as it doesn't really fit between the iMac and G4 tower lines. I think of the G4 as an executive's machine, stylish, yet unobtrusive. If offers all the speed and expandability (through USB and FireWire) that most users will need. Those who want one will find a way to buy one, period."
