Thursday, April 6, 2000
Press Release Edited By Applelinks Contributing Editor Charles W. Moore
MyInternetDesktop.com (MID), a developer of Web-based applications via Internet connected devices, has announced two significant developments that are designed to improve the overall MID functionality and move the platform one step closer to universal accessibility. The company announced it will now provide users with up to 100 MB of virtual hard drive storage capacity for free, an increase of more than 200 percent over the previous offer of 30 MB. Additionally, MyInternetDesktop.com Web-based applications are now available to WebTV users.
MyInternetDesktop.com provides users with free web-based applications for business and personal productivity, and does not require any Java, Active-X, or Plug-in software downloads or installation, making it ideal for use with Internet appliances, web-enabled mobile technologies, gaming consoles and other devices.
Interested users can register at http://www.myinternetdesktop.com and receive 100 MB of virtual hard drive space and full access to all applications, including word processing, email, calendaring, calculator, message center, import/export manager, address book, task manager, virtual hard drive and bookmarking.
"We're excited about moving closer to our ultimate notion of universal accessibility for traditional hard drive applications to all users of Internet appliances," said MID founder and president, Marcelo Lewin. "MyInternetDesktop.com offers a full range of applications to users of most web-enabled devices, and accessibility with WebTV is a tremendous move in the direction of giving users access to their data any time, any where, from any device."
Sales of information appliances may reach the 300 million mark worldwide over the next five years, outpacing PC sales, according to market research firm ETForecasts. IDC similarly forecasts that U.S. shipments of consumer information appliances will outnumber those of consumer PCs by 2002, and predicts that by 2004, the worldwide market for information appliances will have a value of approximately $17.8 billion.
MyInternetDesktop.com runs on any computing platform or appliance with Internet access, including Macintosh, Windows, Linux, QNX, and Unix-based desktop, notebook and handheld computers using Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.02 and above, Netscape Navigator 3.04 and above, AOL 4.0 and above, Opera: 3.6 and higher.
MyInternetDesktop.com also supports non-PC Internet appliances such as WebTV New Classic and Plus, Espial 4.0, and those being developed by NYC-based Internet Appliance Network (http://www.internetappliance.net). Soon, MID will be compatible with the most popular cell phones and PDAs.
MyInternetDesktop.com is an open system, which gives anyone the ability to create their own web-based applications to be shared among friends, family, co-workers or the entire MyInternetDesktop.com community. MyInternetDesktop.com's simple yet powerful open API will be available to any interested party beginning third quarter 2000.
Applications for MyInternetDesktop.com scheduled to be introduced in the near future include presentation / slide show creation, instant messenger, time card management, expense reports, databases, and photo albums, among others.
