Borg in the Back Door? RealNetworks Licenses Windows Media Technology

Wednesday, March 15, 2000

By Senior Editor John H. Farr

This is a developing story and it will be some time before all the ramifications are evident, but for the moment it looks like RealNetworks has chosen to license Microsoft technology instead of QuickTime. But what does licensing really mean?

Mac Observer has a good analysis of this announcement, which you can also read about at CNET. But so many things are unclear: RealNetworks can now configure any of its software, including the popular RealPlayer and JukeBox applications, to support Windows Media. But will they do so? Would content developers then ignore RealAudio and RealVideo, further diminishing the brand? Mac Observer points out that nothing in this arrangement prevents RealNetworks from also licensing QuickTime, of course, but why might they want to? We wish we could make more sense of this than we have so far, but there you have it. Will RealNetworks be assimilated? Stay tuned!
