RAM Doubler 9 Glitches Reported

Friday, January 21, 2000

By Applelinks Contributing Editor Charles W. Moore

A source at Connectix who wishes to remain anonymous has informed us that at least some of the problems users report experiencing installing and using the RAM Doubler 9 upgrade are caused by the old "failure to read the instructons" bug, and makes the following comments:

1. Users reporting the inability to install due to 32 MB of RAM haven't installed properly. As long as users install from their master disks (CD or floppy) and then run the Upgrade (reboot or not), a 32 MB Mac with even OS9 should enjoy the benefits of RAM Doubler 9, without any irksome messages.

2. RAM Doubler 8 _will_ install without a hitch under Mac OS 9. Upon reboot, however, users will discover that it will not be active. Simply run the RAM Doubler 9 upgrade application and reboot. RAM Doubler _9_ will then be active.

If you download Connectix’s RAM Doubler 9 Update, you may be confused as to how to install it over RD 8, since the latter won't run under Mac OS 9. One trick some have reported as working for them is to reinstall RAM Doubler 8 and then immediately run the RD 9 updater before restarting.

Another reported problem is that machines with only 32MB real RAM seem to refuse to load RAM Doubler 9 because Mac OS 9 forces virtual memory to be enabled with 32 MB or less of physical RAM installed, which prevents RAM Doubler from loading.(See comments from the Connectix person quoted above).

There are also reports that RAM Doubler 9 seems to cause the iBook to crash on entering sleep mode if the ‘Preserve Memory Contents on Sleep’ option is selected in the Energy Saver control panel. The reported workaround is to turn that function off. (this is a real bug, and the Connectix source says they will be working on it).

Reportedly there is also a conflict between RAM Doubler 9 and Virex that causes crashes, and can be worked around by shutting one or the other off. (The Connectix person says there may be other workarounds, and that he has successfully run both programs simultaneously without experiencing a crash.)
