Y2K Tip Sheet (New Feature!)

Wednesday, March 3, 1999

By Apple News Editor John H. Farr

Y2K at Applelinks: today inaugurates a new feature of the Apple News. This "Y2K Tip Sheet" will appear as needed throughout the rest of the year and serve as a digest of all the relevant and not-so-relevant Y2K items that we come across -- maybe we'll even learn something! Whenever you see the Tip Sheet appear in a headline on the Applelinks.com front page, you'll know there's been an update.

Mac software: Jeff Tupper of Pedagoguery Software emailed to say that "on our last inventory of our Y2K database, 4 percent of Mac apps had Y2K issues." While this might not sound like a big deal, it certainly could be if you're counting on one of those programs in that 4 percent category. Jeff adds that "most, although not all, Mac software that is in our database that has Y2K problems does have patches / work-arounds available." And Pedagoguery happens to have a nifty Year 2000 Software Audit application that will test all your apps. The demo version will scan a thousand files at once, so you can get an idea of what you may or may not be facing, and yes, there is also a Windows version.

Ukraine is safe! Our morning newspaper has the word from Ukraine that nobody has to worry about Y2K trouble with their nuclear power plants. Why? Old-fashioned technology! We quote Olexander Parkhomenko, a director of the Ukrainian nuclear power agency "Energoatom": "Our Soviet-designed nuclear equipment contains no devices which could be damaged by the Y2K problem. Fortunately, our nuclear energy sector is not fully computerized, and problems existing in the West are not relevant for us."
