Usually whenever someone writes about AppleScript, he or she finds it necessary to point out that the technology is underused, and so it is! But there are a host of tools and resources available to get you started.
In yesterday's and today's editions of MacKiDo, author Tim Mityok has published two excellent articles to help you get the most out of Apple's AppleScript technology, which is not only incredibly helpful and useful but now also much faster than it used to be, thanks to the PowerPC-native version utilized by Mac OS 8.5. The first article, entitled "The Right Tool for the Job," covers what's available in the way of AppleScript editors, from the free version supplied by Apple to more capable commercial programs. We find today's article covering AppleScript resources to be more useful in the short term, as it includes links to Web sites where you can easily download a variety of prewritten scripts for various tasks. Tim also includes links to AppleScript books and quite a few "how-to" Web sites that will give you assistance with writing your own custom scripts. Kudos to the author for assembling all this in one place!
[Your editor is by no means an AppleScript expert, but we use scripts all the time, particularly with Claris Emailer. Fog City Software, the original developer, maintains a great script archive that we have visited frequently. There are scripts for just about anything, including several designed to deal with unsolicited email. Highly recommended! -- JHF]
